Opium Poppy (Papaver somniferum) cultivation

Thanks for the info and the warning,I really appreciate it. I was gonna use flouros instead of my high pressure sodium lights because of the heat my HPS gives off . I have 2 4 foot long flouros housed under a reflector. I have 2 sets of these lights so maybe I won't quit my pain meds just yet, lol!

I think one of the biggest problems with Opium/poppies is also one of its least talked about.

So the so called addiction/withdrawal effect of opium is far worse than say just heroin. See there are 6 major opiates in Opium; morphine, narcotine, codeine, thebaine, papaverine and narceine. Each of these have their own metabolites. As is the case with heroin it is metabolised into two substances. M3G and M6G, M6G being the stuff that makes you high. Now the withdrawals from heroin are a direct result of the activation of TL4 by M3G. Toll Like 4 Receptors when activated are responsible for some awful shit called proinflammatory cytokines which cause depression, restless leg, sweats, fevers, pain and so on.

Intriguingly, TLR4 is activated by morphine-3-glucoronide (M3G), a morphine metabolite that is inactive at classical opioid receptors, but not by morphine-6-glucoronide (M6G), the opioid receptor active metabolite45,46. Along with nonstereoselectivity, the TLR4 signaling activation by M3G, but not M6G, points to a major difference from the structure activity relationship of the opioid receptor with the reliance of 4,5-epoxymorphinans on the 3’OH for classical opioid receptor activity but not for TLR4 activity. M3G action at TLR4 predicts that intrathecal M3G would induce pain enhancement mediated by TLR4, microglia (given their predominance in TLR4 expression), and proinflammatory cytokines (a downstream product of TLR4 activation). Indeed, this is the case46. TLR4 activation by opioids is now implicated in opposing acute and chronic opioid analgesia, and contributing to opioid-induced hyperalgesia, dependence and reward

It appears that most of these other opiates breakdown in a similar fashion with their M3G version going to TL4 and further activating them. It would appear the long you use opiates the greater the activation effect. There appears to be other things going on that they haven't yet identified because its not clear why a opiate naive person doesn't go into immediate withdrawal compared to a long term user.

From the ancedontal reports I've read across bluelight, erowid, drugs.com and several other forums its clear to me that people who use opiates have a really hard time kicking them, far worse than heroin. Some of those opiates in the opium have much longer half-lifes than heroin, consequently your in much greater pain and discomfort as your body finally gets rid of these drugs from your system. Also the ROA is really important with opium. Smoking Opium will result in some serious damage. Whilst with the tea it is almost impossible to calculate your dose. I've been tempted to grow opium to convert into morphine and such but I personally know that i'll end up getting lazy and smoking the shit which will really lead to some difficult situations.

This is the reason why despite having the means to grow large amounts of poppies that I have stayed away from it. The pain and discomfort of heroin withdrawals are worse enough without the pain and misery of opiate metabolites that last significantly longer in my system.

That sounds really shit. I have yet to experience such a thing but my opiate use is only opportunistic not regular. If the half life of those other actives is quite long how much of a break would you recommend between doses? When I had access I went on a rule of thumb 3 days between doses I never had any withdrawals but I did have a sense of loss when I no longer had access not depression just looking forward to the next time.

Poppy WDs are indeed horrendous.

The good news is, you can avoid some of those terribly painful and drawn-out withdrawal scenarios with a disciplined rapid low-dose bupe taper (for example).
This is not to say you can get off scot-free. Not by any means. But things like bupe will certainly hold a opium addicted individual, and with a short (keep it under two months) low dose (sub milligram, preferably) taper, you can negate some of the most nightmarish elements of withdrawing from a broad-spectrum alkaloid opium habit.
I used pod and seed tea for years, it was pretty fucking nasty when i got sick. Thankfully i got by with a little help from my friends (...and friends' diverted subs)

Opium poppies obviously prefer certain climates, yet will adapt to most climates, given the right conditions. They like tilled soil. Sewn 1/8''' deep, not simply scattered along the ground. Lots of sunlight. Light, consistent watering. They may not be the tennis ball-sized pods that we remember from the online pod days, but are still just as potent... And hopefully, plentiful. I had the pleasure of watching some grow this year, even though I do not dose with them now. It is a beautiful process.

This is strictly hypothetical since it's illegal but living in the continental U.S. when would be the best time to plant f an outdoor grow? The seeds exact strain aren't know but am most certain they are Papaver somniferum. Also would it b best to germinate them indoos and if so for how long? Thanks for any help possible, also what would be a good plant food for them?

well you my friend, have come to the wrong place...

we only deal with non-hypothetical, australian situations

but if we were hypothetically american growin indoors, fuck knows

I suggest reading this thread from the start as a general guide line

Namnoc,

if your looking for a bit of info, shoot me a pm. I think I saw you in the pm thread as well. I grew a wee patch this summer and had a good result. (I'm in Canada)

The honey badger that sometimes sleeps in my garbage can is trying this himself and would love any tips other gardeners have!

He understands the key to keeping it legal is to emphasize the flowers are really beautiful if ever asked about them.

They do not like direct sunlight, they have very very fragile roots, and need to be thinned out to grow large enough to cultivate (so he's read)

His are only 3 inches or so but he did find that her washed seeds dumped directly into the flower pots definitely grew. He doesn't know where he'll put them when they get bigger though because she has a balcony which can be easily seen by many.

He would love tips and tricks to make this successful!

Be warned - if you live on a large property, these things grow like wild-flowers, easily, everywhere. I've known people who planted seeds purposefully in the 90s (yes, the 1990s) and they still get crops popping up around their yard, despite having tried to rid them (halfheartedly, obv) a couple times. I guess the point being, you can plant them once and get them again and again and again and,...

Holy shit, are they like snapdragons then? I planted a few small plants last year and this year they popped up everywhere, including my neighbors yard...

I also may have put high quality poppy seeds in every planter on my balcony to see what would work, and multiple plants popped up, one of them actually produced a very small bud this week.

Crossing my fingers it opens and is beautiful, and that my neighborhood isn?t overtaken by poppies nevt year because I was testing out some questionable gardening techniques....

I have my first bud!!!! I can?t believe it so late in the year. It?s small but it?s definitely there!

What should I do, leave it be for a while after it blooms, right? Looks like it?s getting ready to open!

This is SO exciting.

Yeah, harvest after the flowers have bloomed and their petals have fallen off. You will see the classic poppy pods when the petals have dropped.

If you're in the southern hemisphere, i wouldn't say "too late" - i'd say about spot on

I?m actually in the northern hemisphere, have been posting accidentally in the wrong forum.

So it flowered over the weekend then lost all its petals (that was fast), and I can see a VERY small bud.

Since it?s obvious why I grew this (actually spent about 10 months trying to get this far) what now?

I don?t think I should expect much out of such a small pod (unless they grow after it flowers?), but my big question is what now? I have read on how to score the pod, but does anyone have any ideas on how best to do this, how to transform what comes out of the bud and, most importantly, how to not OD when trying it?

I noticed someones front yard near me has heaps growing at the moment, looks like Thailand down that "triangle" of their yard.

technically you're dealing with the pod - the bud is the stage before it flowers.
as for smoking it, you're not going to get anywhere near enough from a single pod - especially a small one.

personally i always found attempts to smoke hone-grown opium a total waste of time - but making tea is really effective if you get it right.

again though - one pod is unlikely to have any psychoactive effects whatsoever, unless it is a very large or potent pod.
if it's really tiny, i don't think you're going to get much from it.
of
it sounds to me like you need to do some research on optimum growing techniques - which are not at all hard to find online, because plenty of people grow poppies as decorative flowers (and sell the seeds too).
stunted growth tends to be a results of insufficient sunlight, water or not inappropriate soil. poppies should be grown in soil without any other plants for their roots to compete with - and keep the poppies about a foot away from each other.
the best time of year to plant them depends on what climate you live in. in australia, its best to plant the seeds in autumn, and they grow through the winter and bloom in late spring - but this is because we have mild winters and very hot summers, whereas they grow well in summer in colder climates.

so yeah, i'd be surprised if you got much from your one tiny pod, but better luck next year. they're a fun plant to grow, and certainly very pretty.

anyway, here's some poppy pod porn

If one was to find a wild bush growing, with half the pods already flowering, and some even having the petals dropped, would eating a fresh pod that has had its petals drop be worth it?

has the plant formed much of the psychoactive alkaloids at this stage? Or would it be best to wait till they?ve dried on the plant? That?s if one was to travel back to where it was found a week or so later? (Returning may not be an option in this situation, so someone might want to make the most out of what they?ve found....common folks... it?s Saturday....I?m allowed to get high.....yeah..?)
