I seriously think this is one of the best movies in a long time. Makes you think so much. It’s strange, but I always find myself watching this movie.

If you haven’t seen it, stop reading this thread now and go watch it.

Anyway, if you were given the choice he had to make at the end… where you could stay in your fantasy world (without even knowing that it wasn’t reality) or go back to the real world, what would you make?

For me, that’s a hard choice… I honestly don’t know.

I saw it with my roomie when it first came out... I like it alot.. because I couldn't figure out the ending..until the end... although I had to explain it to her about three times in the end and she still didn't understand!

this is the sort of film that presents itself as artistic and deep
so people assume that it is

embarassingly thin at points, full of terrible performances, overly dramatic and a terrible ending...

Exactly my view on this film... This movie may seem original but only to anyone who only watches movies that are shoved down their throats through advertising...

For a much better variation on this theme watch an 80's (maybe early 90s??) film called Jacob's Ladder...

Here's a few reasons that most people don't like Vanilla Sky and have nothing but negative statements to give out.....

1. The film was an experiment in a variety of styles from famous directors
-- i.e. Howard Hawks, Francois Truffaut

2. The film deals with the theory of how Lucid Dreams work and how we
can potentially control them

3. There are enough hidden details in the movies ( dialogue, images, etc )
that you can consistantly learn new things the more you watch.....and,
this is not a film for people who desire "instant gratification"

4. Cameron Crowe has worked on the following films
-- Fast Times at Ridgemont High ( novel /screenwriter )
-- Wild Times ( screenwriter )
-- Say Anything ( director/screenwriter )
-- Singles ( screenwriter/director )
-- Conversations with Wilder - Documentary ( Producer )
-- Jerry McGuire -- ( Screenwriter/Director )
-- Almost Famous - ( Screenwriter/Director )
-- Vanilla Sky - ( Screenwriter/Director )
-- Elizabethtown ( to begin production in KY and PA
this summer )

5. The acting is yet another reflection of experimenting with
different styles

It's sad that the majority of people today are wasting time and money on films that are insulting their intelligence and really don't contribute anything at all to what film was created for over 100 years ago......Vanilla Sky is ahead of it's time ( as was the Original Version "Abre Los Ojos" by Alejandro Amenobar -- who also wrote/directed "The Others" ).......It's the films like this, that people speak negatively of, that will still be looked at and studied and respected long after the others have disappeared

punch drunk love was VERY dissapointing coming from the guy who did Boogie Nights

Not wanting to sound like a pretentious, film-studies student but Abre Los Ojos (open your eyes) is a much better film. Although tbf they are nearly identical, it just shows the laziness of american scriptwriters, cameron crowe et al.

Different strokes for different folks, as they say.

I personally LOVE this movie. Is it one that will prove a classic come 30 years from now, who knows? I do know that it thoroughly entertained me - I think Cruise did a great job, and moreover I have a facination with consciousness in general - so this film was right up my alley.

The soundtrack is fantastic.... what more could you ask for: You have Sigur Ros, Radiohead, R.E.M., The Chemical Brothers, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan, etc. One of the best film soundtracks I have heard in years.

I hope the day never comes when I am so pretentious that I can't just sit back and enjoy a film that isn't necessarily academy award winning material.

SG

I saw this in the theatre back when it was first released and thought it was pretty weak in general. I can't stand when everything is wrapped up in a nice package at the end so all the morons in the theatre can understand what happened.

No thanks, I won't be watching it again.

I didn't see Vanilla Sky or any of Crowe's other films - none of which appealed to me when I read the reviews - but I did like Almost Famous. I sort of hated myself for liking it, as it's kinda sickly, but I have to admit I did. I woulda hated it if Tom Cruise had been in it though!

ok so its not a patch on abre los ojos , but its not as bad a film as some posts here would have you believe.watched it again today and it seems better the 2nd time around.( and not cos it couldnt get any worse than the first time, lol) as sg said , im glad i can sit back and enjoy a film without living in fear of being somehow uncool unless i hated it like everyone else.

what i liked most about this film was the premise of the story. imo it is thought provoking. it can be seen (as mentioned), a film talking about lucid dreams, but it can also be seen as a type of representation into the fantasy world in which we all live, to a degree. in this sense it could be said that on premise alone, it resembles that of 'the matrix', and stories alike... also another point which imo is important to make is that in "reality" [ ;) ] the type of technological advancements as portrayed in 'vanilla sky' aren't far off either. >note< by this i am not implying that its an awesome film, rather that such elements make it more plausible (on some levels).

generally for a movie like this id say the exact same thing as i would for a slightly more recent flick like the 'butterfly effect' - and that is "interesting story, yet this by far does not alone make for a great movie."

at the end of the day... this is not a great film, but IS among the better choices of the (vast majority) of commercial films that you're likely to find at your local blockbuster video store.

also can not fail to mention that...

tom cruise is one of the most disgustingest men on the face of this world!! :p

This movie was fucking weird as hell.........but I loved it. It's been awhile since I've watched it, and the last time I did I was on a bad acid trip so it was confusing as hell. Tom Cruise is an awesome actor and Paired with Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruiz, it was a great combination. This film is one of my favorites.

I liked this film, but I agree with others it was very confusing. I had to watch it a second time to actually understand the whole movie LoL

I LOVE THIS FILM and ive seen it a dozen times
I willl never forget the Sigur Ros ambient music just right before the end......that scene touches me like NO OTHER FUCKING MOVIE EVER HAS!
