Presenting...
The ED Pamphlet Design Contest

After a bit of random deliberation, it was decided amongst the staff that it would be a wonderful idea to begin some more active harm reduction strategies. Bluelight has become a fantastic online resource for people seeking the truth about recreational substances amidst that ocean of dangerous lies, myths, and propaganda, but in order to spread our message of safety and responsibility to a wider audience, we had the idea to create a pamphlet to be distributed at events, raves, and other locales where (in this case) ecstasy would be commonly used. And, because I feel competition spurs a strong drive for creativity, it’s going to be a contest!

The goal of the contest is simple: to create a pamphlet that outlines basic harm reduction techniques for using ecstasy – essentially what we talk about in our forum every day. The pamphlet should be both informative and easy to understand for the casual user. It should also, obviously, be as legible as possible, considering the locations in which people would be likely reading it. It doesn’t just have to be text – illustrations and diagrams are great too, as long as they don’t veer off into too much complexity. Somewhere on the pamphlet should also be a reference to Bluelight – even just a URL would suffice, but including the logo in some way would be a fun idea too, and if you have room, a short description of the website wouldn’t be a terrible idea. Another important thing to remember: the information should be globalized to an extent – people around the world will be reading this – try to refrain from localized slang and other data only applicable to your area. It would need to be approximately one-half the size of standard A4 paper – this way two could be easily printed out from any common printer and cut out for distribution.

We’re going to run this contest for three months. At the end of the time period, we will all vote as a forum on the entries. The winner of the contest will get a gloriously fashionable surprise that will make you the envy of your fellow Bluelighters. Seriously. And, we will heavily push and encourage everyone to print out the winning pamphlet and distribute it at your next rave, house party, or any place where people are likely to take ecstasy. We can also vote on modifications to the winning pamphlet if we all decide as a collective for minor changes. At that point, we should work as a team to make the best pamphlet possible, but we’ll jump that hurdle once we reach it.

This is your chance to get more involved in keeping people safe worldwide. If you believe in what this website stands for, and you have a flair for design and artistic expression, then send us your submission! This is really only the beginning – other forums are considering taking a step towards more of this active harm reduction. Instead of being a website that people come to, we’re going to try and be a website that comes to the people. This is your opportunity to be a part of that.

We will be accepting submissions through my email – you can reach my email link through my user profile. We would prefer the submissions be converted to .pdf format. Any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask in this thread or via PM or email to any of our moderators. Good luck, and most importantly, have fun!

How to win: here's a big hint -- The MDMA Essential Guide would be a great general reference for your pamphlet. I think going over common adulterants, preventing or dealing with common side effects, what to do during the comedown, how to avoid water intoxication and overheating, how much to take your first time, and a brief list of common myths are all great ideas to be used on the pamphlet. Feel free to sprinkle anything else you can fit in there -- there's all sorts of good material in the guide.

Can we get some specifics on format?

Such as document size, type of paper, minmum resolution, etc?

That's for the paper size.

If it's going to be globalised, then different-language versions would be appropriate - or are we going to assume that English is going to be the 'global language' (and if so, UK English or American English).

Again, if it's going to be properly 'globalised' - can I suggest that it takes account of people with sight-impairment (I realise this could include everybody already on E, but I can't think of a format that takes account of eye-wiggle ;)). But seriously, given the size of format available (half A4 and perhaps with graphics and logo) there isn't going to be much room for info - let alone 'larger print' versions for sight-impaired people. And colour and font are important for people with less severe impairments also.

Not trying to complicate matters - just looking to be inclusive - after all, us drug-takers are not all perfect when it comes to the state of our five senses.

Considering that English is the official language of Bluelight, we are catering to the English speaking population anyway, so the flyer will be in English. UK English and American English are frankly so similar that it doesn't make a shred of difference which one you use. For instance, I can tell what you mean by "globalised", even though the American spelling would be with a 'z'. The biggest difference would be the usage of slang and colloquials, which can be avoided.

There should be enough room for basic information. We don't need to go into too much detail. The fact that we link the person back to the website will allow the user to seek more information interactively at a later time on Bluelight. The challenge will be to make a flyer that is both readable for the most people possible and the most informative given the space available.

From a rave perspective, I doubt that people will be reading them at rave parties, whilst on drugs. People don't usually read flyers for upcoming parties until they get home, and it's not like the average raver has a flashlight handy (well, maybe a glowstick, but that's pretty worthless) and reading glasses to bust out randomly to check out our pamphlet. Most people will probably (hopefully) hold onto our pamphlet and read it at a later date (and then, if all goes according to plan, "chase" our pamphlet with a dose of Bluelight.ru).

Well, my in-laws are visiting this weekend, and thanks to the SO avatar contests I've now gotten my feet wet on some graphics programs. I'll see what I can try to start this weekend - laughter should ensue :)

^^Pfft, screw laughter. Hilarity should ensue! j/k

Any specifics on the prize?
How about a massive assortment of raver gear and a year's worth of batteries?
I would ask, "How 'bout a fuck-ton of E?," but, you know...

It's a fabulous colorful something. Need I say more? =D

Actually, yeah, it's a year's worth of batteries.

Bluelight! Brought to you today by Duracell(tm) -- it's not just a battery, it's Duracell(tm).

<embarrassed face>
Well, I don't know...
Wouldn't it make sense to give away a bunch of batteries to go with the raver gear (different kinds of light paraphernalia) that was previously mentioned...?

Cool thanks. I was looking in the guide but it is all so good that I didn't know what would be best. I have never done ecstasy yet I probably know more than the average user, so it was hard for me to feel out what might be most pertinent.

lol sounds like a plan! :D

This is a rough, resized, something or other. Suggestions/criticism more than welcome.

I already see some things I am going to change and I have not spell checked this yet.

I got one like that(as well as 1 similar to that for 2c-b, ketamine, cannabis, cocaine, meth, heroin, ghb, alcohol, amyl nitrates, nitrous, and a whole bunch other I cant remember) from Dancesafe. They were passing them out at this big campout rave last Septemeber. They didn't have as much info on them, but it was all accurate.
