About Us
Shamans of the Amazon

Genre: Documentary

In 1997, filmmaker Dean Jefferys travelled to the headwaters of the Amazon in Ecuador to document the struggle of the tribal peoples against the oil companies and the encroaching outside world.

Now, Dean has returned to the Amazon with his partner and daughter to chronicle the ancient and mysterious world of hallucinogenic shamanic rituals and their adaptation into Western cultures.

In the presence of a trained shaman, Jefferys drinks the brew, known as ayahuasca, which is said to allow the shaman to enter other dimensions where complicated healings, shamanic battles, clairvoyance, initiations, ancestral knowledge exchange and communications with the plant, animal and spirit world are possible.

Some contemporary Amazon shamans are using ayahuasca to determine their strategies to fight the oil companies and other invaders on their traditional land.

Jefferys also travels to Amsterdam, where a Brazilian woman is developing a program incorporating ayahuasca use to help heroin addicts quit their addiction; and films the first ever public demonstration to legalise the hallucinogenic plant.

One of the world's most renowned psychedelic explorers - Terence McKenna - is interviewed at his home in Hawaii; and Jeffereys also discovers that one of the active ingredients in the shamans' potion - Dimethlytriptamine (DMT) - can be extracted from the native wattle or acacia in Australia. (An SBS Independent production, in English and Spanish).

Interesting that it includes references to Australian DMT sources. Should be great viewing :)
