Tell me I'm not alone in wanting to travel

My dear bluelighters, here I ask all of you -
Am I not the only one in here who is dying to get out and see the fuckin world ??!
Am I the only one here that on the odd occasion, when I need to daydream a bit, I jump on Lonely Planet Online and read stories, check out destinations and look at photos ??
I'm now almost 19.
And just during the week over lunch with a friend I first realised that I have not been out of Victoria in almost two years now. And it's been even longer since I got very far past the border. Next I realised that I have never made it out of Victoria without my parents!
What lies on the road ahead is eating away at me !
And then speaking to people who are soon to leave .. or who have been and returned and told me tales .. or who are overseas at the moment and tell me via email about the places they are at .. it eats away at me that little bit more.
The worst is when I speak to my uncle ~ he gives me the update of one of his daughters', my cousin, and how she has been travelling through South East Asia, over the Himalayas, down through Tibet, Nepal, India, Pakistan and is currently in Afghanistan.
I'm starting to lose it here.
No I'm not starting. I started about two years ago. Now it's stepped up a gear.
If I had the choice, I'd pack up in a week from now and take off overseas (hmm maybe not next week ~ realistically I'd probably wait until after new years eve ~ I dont want to miss earthcore).
First I'd go to Europe.
England, France, Spain, Switzerland and the Netherlands top of my list.
I'd just drift around, with my camera ~ instead of planning my route before I go, just go with enough resources that I can just see what happens, see who I meet and where I hear stores about, and go wherever the road takes me.
Another big fantasy / dream of mine ~ to go to South America .. to Brazil, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Venezuela and also Mexico.
Again to float around - to see / experience the culture, to just be in a world so completely different from here.
A friend of mine travelled to Cuba with his mother last summer, as well as the United States. He showed me this beautiful photo of a road running behind a small shack-like building sitting on the bank of a vast, glimmering lake, facing on the opposite side a mountain range and the sun setting over those mountains. As I looked at this picture, I said to my friend, "You know if there's one place I'd love to be, it would be there, sitting out the back of that small shack there, my feet up, watching the sun set over those mountains every dusk, toking on a big fat J".
Another friend just recently returned from India and told me how she loved her adventure over there, but how she found it to be so crazy over there and such a different world to what happens over here that she's glad to be back.
I want to know your opinions.
The topic is >> travelling.
Anyone who goes off topic will be shot and will get kicked out of my thread. Yes, this is mine. I made it. You want to come in here and socialise and leave annoying one-line posts that include only some smartass personal joke comment that only two other people will understand > ? I will personally kick you out ! (within reason)

I want to hear about where people have been ~ not only overseas but here in Australia too.
I want to hear the stories that people who have made it out there have brought back.
I want to hear where you want to go ~ which places you feel are calling your name.
I want to hear your dreams of leaving the world you know and finding another.
So tell me.

Well my dream is to just get out into the world, live anywhere i manage to find. Drive to places unknown.
The place I'd definately love to venture into is a rainforest and to just be with nature, bathing under a waterfall or relaxing beside a calm stream. Meeting exotic people and eating exotic foods. And to be with the one I love by my side. Just to be on the road from one place to the next without having to worry about anything. Well that's my dream. Wheather u people like it or not you're not dreaming this dream I am.
I'd actually like to hear some stories about where people have traveled to also.

Yeah I'd love to do some more travelling. I went to the US a few years ago with family and it was awesome.
Since then I've had the travel-bug. I'm so envious of these people who just pack up and decide to go back-packing thru Europe for 6 months. I love watching Getway and seeing all those exotic places throughout the world.
I'm hoping within the next few years I'll get to explore the world. I want to go all throughout Europe and I'd love to go to Mexico and Central America. I think it would be soo cool, just to be able to back-pack around the world and just end up wherever the road takes you.
Hey, I just noticed. I've finally moved up the ranks to Bluelighter!

Just got back from overseas ms. If you want to come over one day/evening we can show you our pics and videos and dassle you with our amazing stories
smile.gif

In seven months we went to:
England
Ireland
Wales
Scotland
France
Italy
Slovenia
Austria
While living and working in and around london. The experience really opens your eyes to the way the rest of the world works.
The thing that really sticks in my mind, is just how much history is over there, and how little we have here. Australia seems to have been around for a couple of weeks compared to these places.
But anyway man, do it, just do it. Decide that is what you are going to do. Save, save save and do it.

Well, as most of you know, i'm lucky enough to have this chance to travel. In less than three weeks I am off to Euroland to explore.
Mikey, ive been planing this for a year now (giving serious thought to it for about 2) so make sure you plan well in advance when and where you want to go, because as romantic as it sounds, just packing up and going is a lot harder than you think. I booked my ticket 4 1/2 months ago. Had I left it one more day I would not have made the flight, and would be in Melbourne until march. Just make sure you book your flight well in advance.
We (alex and I) have a rough plan set out in our minds but by no means do we have a strict schedule. These are the countries we are going to though: Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Germany, Belgium, France, England for NYE. We will take everyday as it comes. The thought of not having any responsibility, the freedom of travel and not knowing where we will be the next day excites me to no end.
I am also thinking of staying over there for a while. This has been nigling in the back of my mind but the prospects keep seeming more appealing by the day. I am lucky in the fact that I hold dual citizenship which allows me to work and like in the UK for as long as I want, so I dont have to fart around with working VISAs and such. I dunno, I need a change of scenery, I need to get away from here and see the world, meet new people. I guess school really drags you down and you get that institutionalised feeling, where you want to break free of the shackles of everyday life.
Anyway, i'm rambling, but I know where you are coming from dude, and if it does happen that I stay in UK, you are welcome to shack up with me as long as you want!!

I totally understand you man. Travelling is one of the best things to ever do. It broadens the mind and you learn so much more about people and cultures. In 1997 I lived in the USA for a year and traveled throughout the UK. WHile these two places are not exactly as different as asia or parts of Europe. I learnt so many new things about people I think it also made me a more tolerant person as well. Man start saving now and get travelling. I'd give anything to be able to travel around Europe and Asia. There is just so much to see

MEOOOOW!

hey Mikey..i know how you feel...the whole wanting to skidaddle off somewheres...i want to go to Europe. ie; Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Scandinavian States, Germany, Austria...and then to Mexico and the rest of south america....
i have lived in ~NewYork~ for a month and been to Washington, Baltimore(oh how i love it), Philly, and then SanFransisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, .and down to Florida.
oh and i went to london a few christmas' ago
i plan to go back to Baltimore or NY state..to go to college.and play lacrosse..
baa lofty heights ..but still. dare to dream

I went all around europe with my mum when I was 12
I would love to go again and prolly will in the next 1.5yrs
Some people I know asked me if I wanted to go to equador with them, I checked it out and as a single woman it sux!! (harrassment and stuff)
I personally would love to go to africa as well..but you need a fair amount of money to go there I think. Some of my friends went to Nigeria for new years, how bizarre is that?!.
Heres a bit of a wierd story..
a girl I know was travelling around the eastern block countries and got arrested for coke smuggling (she wasn't though!!)
she was in prison in slovakia for like a year while her parents were desprately trying to find her. They had to pay heaps to get her out . When she came back she could speak Slovakian fluently and hence got a job at SBS!!

Yes, mikey - i love to travel, and fortunately, so do my parents, so i have had a pretty large amount of overseas travel.
I have been to;
England
Ireland
Wales
France
Switzerland
Spain
Italy
Indonesia
Vanuatu
Papua New Guinea
Pacific Islands
Hong Kong
and a few more.
Personally, i love urban settings, with the vibe of the city and the vast cultural differences, but also i love the scenery and seeing the "real" side of the country, even if it is depressing poverty amongst breath-taking scenery.
Well, im only young (just 19), and my plans for travel have been put on hold til i finish uni, but i definately want to see the US, more of Europe, live in London, and see more of asia and the americas.
Icq me if you want any info on europe or any of the other countries, or just a general chat.

I hear you buddy....
Next year, I'm blowing off uni and pissing off round the world!! It's going to be fuckin tops!
Starting end of feb: First to asia (sooo cheap even with our shit house dollar!!) trekking from thailand to vietnam through cambodia! I'm still looking for travelling partners for this one, so if there is anyone out there, ICQ or email!
Then over to Istanbul, and right around the meditteranian (?) to portugal and then down to Morroco!
Then the planis to find gainful employment in the UK until they sack me or physically remove me! Then with all those sweet sweet pounds i've made fly down to the USA, Check out NY, down to New Orleans, then to Cuba, Jamiaca, across to mexico, then back up to the US (LA) and then home again home again, maybe via some sweet pacific Island!!
Hows that sound??

BOYAKASHA!!!

Yeah MikeyS well said, and you know through our discussions that we share the same passions to travel - you to South America and me to Ireland.
I have travelled to Greece, Macedonia, Thailand and the Phillipines when I was 12 back with my mother - so long ago and I would to do the Greek Islands again - prefably on a boat that does not sink
wink.gif

I live for travelling even if it's just down the coast here in Victoria

Yes Mikey, welcome to the world of people who love to travel.I've been hooked ever since my first trip overseas at the age of 12.I go overseas at least once a year,it is totally addictive for me and I know I will never stop.Everytime I go somewhere, as soon as I get home,I'm checking out where I can go next
smile.gif

There are so many places I'd love to travel to and also spend extended periods of time in
Some of the places I've travelled to already and most more than once are-
Philippines,Thailand,Indonesia,Fiji,New-Zealand,England,Scotland,France,Italy,Netherlands and Spain.
I have sooo many wonderful memories of all these places and can't wait to go back to all of them again plus many other countries I haven't experienced yet
smile.gif

Sorry for rambling but if you haven't guessed already, travel is my number one passion.Just try talking to me about it and you won't be able to shut me up for hours
smile.gif

I too have itchy feet
smile.gif

I haven't travelled much, but here's where I've been:
England (born & raised there)
Thailand
Malaysia
Singapore
I've off to Canada (and maybe the US) in January, and I've already started planning my next trip (hopefully Peru). I've decided the best way to go would be to alternate between "western" countries and less developed countries, to get the most culture shock possible
smile.gif

I agree with Horsey that you need to plan your trip. Planning is part of the fun...building the anticipation of what a fucking fantastic time you're going to have
smile.gif
When you research a destination thoroughly, you can find the hidden treasures that aren't as famous as the usual tourist attractions, but often better.
Having a plan also makes it a hell of a lot easier to save your money ("hrmm...I could have another pill tonight, or I could save my money and go sea-canoeing when I'm in Thailand"). And while you're stuck in Australia saving up or finishing uni, start learning a language or two

Excellent Topic MikeySammy...
Despite the fact that Ive got alot on my plate (even an exam tomorrow morning), I can't stop thinking about getting out there to experience the world...
Im currently working fulltime.. and saving for one reason only, and that is to visit Trini in the short term...though it hasn't been finalised as of yet.
Secondly, my plan of attack is to finish my degree within the next cpl of years..meanwhile continuiing to work full time. I will be so preoccupied with study that I can't help but save the money I earn from my job!
When I graduate in 2-3 years, I will also have 3-4 years work experience under my belt, plus a shit load of cash saved... So I can then plan to take off and live o/s for a cpl of years....possibly a working holiday too. Ill return to Australia when im about 25 to continue on with my career....
I guess what i'm emphasising here is it is a hard balancing act to establish a career while you are yet to enjoy life, but if you set some goals and be disciplined...hopefully it can be done
I totally undertstand and relate when you think you just wanna get the fuck out of the country and see the world, but i'm trying to do it in a fashion that doesn't jeopardise my career; instead it just delays it for a cpl of years
wink.gif

But the irresistable temptation to pack my bags and go still remains.....
Oh and as for countries to visit...i have my entire heart set on Trini. But other than that...I'm not sure yet. Oh well, back to the lonely planet website I go

I didn't like my former sig, so ive changed it to this

your not alone in wanting to travel
you asked someone to tell u so i thought i should
smile.gif

I can't wait to finish my degree and get the FUCK out of this country...
I haven't been anywhere... I've been out of the state like 3 times in my whole life.
Stories? Fuck have I heard stories...
Oh Italy! Where for art thou Italy?!?!?

mikeysammy, you're definately not alone in wanting to travel. i've had the travel bug ever since i got home from singapore in 97. it was with my parents and only for a week, but i still had a fantastic time. i expected it to be a concrete jungle in the city, but there were HUGE beautiful trees everywhere. it was extremely hot (i wouldn't really say humid) and what amazed me the most was that everyone who lived there wore pants and long sleved shirt all the time.
i had planned to go to europe with a friend earlier this year, but she pulled out just before we were about to book it and i didn't want to go by myself so i haven't had the chance to go back o/s yet. however, i'm about 90% definately going to europe next year for around 4 - 6 weeks. i'm even considering moving o/s (europe or london/england) for a year or 2 to work. i've been told by a friend that i should definately do that and i'm going to take the opportunity to do so while i'm young. my only problem is work - i have a good job with a huge opportunity to move to a higher position in about a year (my new title will be client service manager - impressive for a 20 year old huh??
smile.gif
)
i've also been to new zealand with my parents when i was about 14. apart from a few major cities, the rest is like a small country town. i've never been to tasmania, but new zealand is what i imagine it to be like. small, quiet, cold, green, overcast most of the time. i'd definately consider going to christchurch on a skiing holiday though.
are you still coming up to brissy after earthcore with haste? i hope so! we are all really excited about you two coming up here. anyone else wanna come up too??
smile.gif

My Precious brother... you know you're not alone in this...
We will see the world together you and I baby...... especially the islands in the Caribbean and South America....

aaahhh travel. *sigh*
well, i grew up in england, ireland, malta, and 4 years in germany before we moved to australia. when in germany we basically went all over europe to see stuff. my folks were determined to make the best of it while they could.
since then, i travelled the states for 5 months, where i met asymmetry (you know how that tale ends!)
smile.gif

i cant wait to travel again, unfortunately w/ work and schooling etc, its going to be a while. i got a credit card even tho i was on the dole before i left for the states, w/ a 3000$ limit, and its still maxed out at 3000. but i dont regret a thing!
if you can, go =)
smilez! =)

travel is one of the most amazing things you can possibly do. i have been lucky enough to travel around australia numerous times and to other places around the world as well.
i have found it to be the most enlightening and enjoyable things i have ever done, hence i am leaving in under 3 weeks for europe (pack ya bags, you're outta here sunshine!)
MikeyS - don't worry too much about travelling, just find the time, put away the money, start planning and begin to dream of where you want to go, coz if you really want to go, you'll get there! a friend of mine in germany gave me this advice one day - 'when you are young, you have no money and lots of time. when you are old, you have lots of money and no time.'
the point is, travel whenever you can, even if it is only to the border, but just enjoy the journey!
haste - i'll be in touch with you as i am leaving brissy on the 27th and i wouldn't mind meeting up with you in europe, somewhere!
ww7 - why aren't you coming with me!!!!!
Everyone needs to travel, it is the best way to learn.
