Experts challenge claims that legal high 'mexxy' does not have side-effects

A new legal high misleadingly marketed as a safe substitute for ketamine is becoming increasingly popular in the UK, experts have warned.

Methoxetamine, known as MXE or "mexxy", mimics the effects of the banned anaesthetic ketamine, and its use has grown over the last six months in Britain as well as northern Europe, say charity workers.

A survey of drug trends published in November showed that the use of both ketamine, which is a class C drug, and methoxetamine, its "legal doppelgänger", is on the rise in several areas of the UK.

As methoxetamine is not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act in the UK, it can be purchased legally over the internet. Suppliers market the drug as "bladder-friendly", claiming it does not cause cramps or damage the bladder – side-effects associated with heavy ketamine use.

But experts say no evidence has been found to support such claims and that the drug carries the same risks as ketamine, which can include impaired mental health.

I noticed the article doesn't seem to be attracting any reader comments. That probably means that the article is buried somewhere well away from the front page. When we see articles on the front page of the Daily Mail then that's more of a concern.

It's been on my local tv news channel now with the 2 deaths in Lincolnshire with possible MXE connections. I doubt that it'll be long until the Media catch on and the government do the reflex 'ban' motion. Which is a shame.

After some friends of mine took mxe, one of them suffered a mental breakdown. The effects of the high lasted for a week, more specifically; paranoia, delusion, anxiety. He ended up in a mental institution for a week. 8 days later he relapsed for no apparent reason , suffering with the same effects as the first experience. He is currently still in the institution and I can only hope that this will be the last episode, but somehow this seems unlikely. Please spread this story and make people aware of the risks mxe carry.

Is this a troll or what? I've never heard anyone have any experience like that on MXE.

'Safe Ketamine': Experts Warn Over Trend For ‘Legal High' Drug

A new ‘legal high’ drug is being mistakenly dubbed as the ‘safe’ version of ketamine and is becoming increasingly popular in the UK, a recent study has revealed.

According to widespread research by DrugScope, dangerous party drug ketamine has a legal doppelganger in the form of methoxetamine (MXE) or ‘Mexxy’, which mimics the effects of ketamine.

The Druglink Street Drug Trends 2011 report, published in November by the drugs charity, discovered a growing trend of ketamine use in the UK, with MXE being marketed as the ‘safer’ version for drug-goers worried about the side effects of ketamine.

A new legal high billed as a safe alternative to ketamine is flooding on to Britain's streets, a charity has said.

Methoxetamine - which can easily be bought online - has seen a surge in popularity in Britain and across northern Europe in recent months.

The drug, also known as MXE or mexxy, is described as having the same effect as ketamine without the side effects.

However, police are linking it to the deaths of a 59-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man in Leicester and Melton Mowbray over the weekend. It is believed to be the first time the new high has been linked to fatalities in Britain. Detective Inspector Rob Widdowson, of Leicestershire Police, said: 'We are investigating the circumstances leading to the deaths of these two people in order to prepare files for the coroner.

This one comes to us from the Daily Mail, which warns us about the hottest new drug in England, methoxetamine. Also know as MXE, it serves as a legal alternative to ketamine. Your kids are most likely doing it in the bathroom right now as you read this.

Safe ketamine? You means there's a dangerous sort?

…and what is a "health alert"? Are there sirens and flashing lights going off somewhere?
