Senior Liberal Democrat MPs have escalated their controversial campaign to force the Government into decriminalising drugs. Tom Brake, head of the Lib Dem committee on Home Affairs, has laid down a parliamentary motion calling for ministers to consider adopting controversial measures adopted in other countries. The motion, which has the support of MPs from all main parties, calls for the Government to recognised the need for ‘evidence-based’ policy making. It also urges ministers to set up an independent panel to examine the effectiveness of current drug laws.

‘What minor successes there have been in Portugal are down to treatment, not decriminalisation. In fact both cocaine and cannabis use has increased there.’

Are you worried the Lib Dems are trying to decriminalise drugs?

The pernicious influence of the Lib Dems is becoming more and more damaging. If it is true that they are to launch a motion calling for reform of government drug laws then it is quite clear they are over-stepping the agreements of the coalition.

At their party conference, they voted to decriminalise drugs and it seems they are going to take this policy into government. It stands against everything this consensus-driven coalition is meant to represent and Cameron needs to tell Clegg to knock it on the head before it gets out of hand.

Imagine the money they'd save and make if drugs were decriminalised..

Where could that money then go.. hmmmmm..

The "war on drugs" goes against everything america stands for, and as far as im concerned calling us the "land of the free" is a total joke and entirely laughable.

Our constatutional right says we can consume whatever we want yet the devious manipulative governmernt used their charisma and satanic ways to sway the tides in thier favor.

Legalize all drugs or see the downfall of America firsthand!

Seems funny the LibDem's are taking a stand with domestic drug policy. They've lent what little credibility they have with the voters to the Tory anti-union, anti-worker austerity measures while getting very little if anything in return. Seems silly they want to tangle over this of all things. I wonder what specific proposals they are trying to get through; more 'panels' and 'committees' and 'studies' are worthless- concrete changes that mean on-the-ground differences for recreational users and addicts and the criminal justice system are what need to happen or else it's more hot air.
