An inquest has heard a teenage girl died after taking a legal high. Tanya Louise Hughes was found unconscious at a house on Ormley Avenue in Ramsey in April. The 17 year old died in an ambulance on the way to hospital. An inquest opened today. A post mortem revealed that a drug called MDAI was the cause of her death.
The substance is legal and mimics the effects of ecstasy. Coroner John Needham said it's obvious these drugs are dangerous and warned people against taking them. The inquiry was adjourned whilst further investigations are carried out.

Coroner of inquests John Needham has issued a stark warning about the dangers of legal highs after a 17 year-old girl overdosed on MDAI.

The drug, which can be bought over the internet, is still legal in the Isle of Man.

Tanya Louise Hughes of Gladstone Avenue, Ramsey, died in an ambulance on April 15 as she was being taken to Noble’s Hospital.

The court heard the ambulance crew had reported she’d gone into cardiac arrest between Windy Corner and the Creg-ny-Baa.

The body of the trainee customer services operator was identified by her father John Edward Hughes at Noble’s Hospital.

Today’s (Wednesday) hearing was told by consultant forensic pathologist William Lawler that Miss Hughes had died as a result of toxicity of the drug methylenedioxy 2 aminoindane.

Mr Needham heard the drug isn’t banned under the Misuse of Drugs Act and remains legal.

He said the death of a young person so close to her 18th birthday should be a warning to anyone considering taking such substances.

The case was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

It doesn't seem unfathomable that MDAI was indeed the cause. Adverse or allergic reactions can happen with any substance. Out of the billions of people in the world some will drop dead if they eat a peanut, and some will drop dead if they eat a capsule of MDAI. It's certainly a tragedy for her loved ones, but c'est la vie.

I wish the coroner would be a little more specific about this though. Was it a simple allergic reaction or something else?

In other news, the legal drugs Alcohol and Tobacco killed several thousand people in the past few days.
All of their parents demanded that the drugs be banned, but were immediately silenced by representatives of huge companies, who duct-taped their mouths and put them where the media could not access them.

It looks like the predictable 'Lethal drug should have been banned' chorus has started already.

I have serious doubts as to whether it was MDAI at all with this kind of nonsense going on.

Did the coroner actually test the substance she took to see what it was? Or just go by what it says on the label?

The police and politicians are quick to remind us that the substance may not be what it says on the packet when it suits their propaganda purposes. Then when someone suffers they just presume that it IS what it says on the packet when it suits their agenda.

More people die from APAP per year.

The people who dig this kind of news are the highly suggestible type.

MHK awaits report on legal high before taking steps to have it Banned

MDAI is available online and currently has legal status on the Isle of Man

It was revealed in court yesterday that Ramsey teenager Tanya Hughes died following an overdose of legal high MDAI. Tanya died on her way to Nobles after medics found her to be unresponsive and unconscious at a property in Ramsey. The substance can be obtained over the Internet and currently retains legal status in the Isle of Man. The drug is set to carry many of the same affects as Ecstasy and has only a few minor differences to the notorious class A. Member for Home Affairs Bill Malarkey MHK said it's currently an ongoing battle to keep on top of the legal high situation as an increasing amount of substances are appearing on the market. The Advisory Council of Misuse of Drugs are now looking into the substance, and once they report back to the Drugs and Alcohol Strategy team it will then be decided whether or not to put a case to Tynwald to have it banned.

mdai killed a man who combined it with methoxetamine before, it surely can like any other drug be dangerous in the wrong circumstances.

also its garbage

Have you ever had proper MDAI?

yeah, its a boring serotonin release effect without any of the positive push of other MD drugs like MDMA or MDA or even (though not MD) 6APB/aMT.

it combines well with dopamine releasers/reuptake inhibitors but overall i wasn't impressed.

when mixed with mdppp i had strong feelings of being loved up but overall i prefer real mdma despite the comedown.

its just a boring drug (though i would hazzard a guess it mixes well with alcohol, ala methylone)

Boring for raving. But great for therapy and mediation.

Oh well. Another potential treatment for depression/PTSD/etc bites the dust.
