It smelled like meth, but it was just a mess

The intense odor of ammonia led two Sarpy County sheriff's officers to suspect that they had uncovered a methamphetamine lab Wednesday night.
But there was no lab, only a large Rottweiler that attacked them when the door opened.
Sgt. Kevin Griger and Deputy Bob Hrbek were treated at Midlands Community Hospital for puncture wounds and cuts on their arms and were released.
The ammonia smell was simply dog urine, Lt. Russ Zeeb said. "It smelled so bad that you just couldn't stand it."
Initially, Hrbek responded to a call about a sick child at a residence east of Springfield. Zeeb described the home as an apartment and adjoining dog kennel.
When Hrbek smelled the ammonia, he called in Griger, who is trained in dealing with meth labs.
The dog's owner was ticketed for harboring a dangerous animal. The child was fine, Zeeb said.
The Humane Society removed the Rottweiler from the kennel, as well as about 13 other Rottweilers and pit bulls.
