I'm planning a trip there in a few months, and I was just wanting to know other people's experiences who have been there.
Obviously they have pretty full on drug laws, but what about over the counter pharmaceuticals and mushroom shakes & the like?
Thanks..
JJ

Having done the backpacking thru Thailand thing 2 years ago, my only advice is regarding "supplements" is, be brazen and ask for it yourself. Approach the bartender, DJ, hotel staff, whatever. Do not trust anyone who comes up to you with claims of being able to source it. You can pretty much get anything you want, but be extremely careful with the shrooms!

went up through thailand last year
went up to the golden triangle
and into Burma (now known as Myanmar)
the best place to find shit is up in the area of the Golden Triangle where Thailans meets Laos and Burma...into somewhat of a triangle
the best places are Chiang Kong and Mae Sai....anywhere along the Mekong River should be sweet
but I suggest you don't go into Burma like I did coz the officials rape your luggage and take you passport the minute you walk in just coz they are a military run country (pretty fucked up place)
so yeah
stay in Thailand (or Laos) and mainly ask the tribespeople (if you are looking for opium), because it is legal for them to possess it and use it....you can find these tribespeople in any large cities around there...Mae Hong Son....or even further north!
Have fun ok?
cheers!

That's probably as specific as we'd want to get with the locations, thanks guys.

I have travelled extensively through Thailand three times, each time going to the full moon parties on Ko Pha-Ngan. I found that by my last visit, two years ago, they are becoming extensively commercialised and a relative rip-off, especially where drugs are concerned. There are lots of dud caps and pills being sold in the south of the island, although I have been told by several people independently that the north and west of the island holds greater "treasures". The first two times I went to Ko Pha-Ngan, mushroom shakes and omlettes of various strengths were easily had, but upon my third visit, none could be found.
As posted above, northern Thailand really is the go drug-wise, but be careful, I have heard some really scary stories, and not from kids either. Several tourists have been murdered for no apparent reason while in northern Thailand, so be aware that it is a large, rural tropical rainforest type area where VERY FEW Thais speak English, and you really will be very isolated.
I also hear that speed use is rife among the locals in Bangkok, but I have no personal experience of that. As regards OTC stuff, I brought plenty of valium back. I just went to every chemist I saw and asked for ten or twenty. Some refused or questioned me further, but only about 15%. Some even asked whether I would like 2mg or 5mg tablets, and one even offered me powdered valium by the kilogram!!
Hope this helps!

in BK, some pharms still carry Captagon (Fenetylline Chlorhydrate), which definitely beats a cup of coffee....

Hello There,
I've been to Thailand a number of Times (5)starting way back in 1989 backpacking through southern Thailand, Bangkok and then down to near the Cambodian border, thru to rather recently.
If one is "aware" then you can find most things. However I urge you to err on the side of caution.
Don't buy anything off the locals (You just never know)
You can't be sure of what you are buying over there.
Thai police are on very low wages.(Think about it)
There are many "farangs" in Thai jails.
Thai jails are prehistoric and suicide inducing.
PLEASE be careful. I don't mean to scare you but to make you aware of the reality over there.
Pharmacuticals.... Go first to "Vaults of Ewroid" (I think that's how you spell it) and check out all the goodies. Print the pages. Take to any Chemist over there. Try around tourist areas as they will have a greater selection. With these you will be a great deal safer than the 'illegals"
Go and read the book called "Damage Done" by Warren Fellows. Then make up your mind.
Aside from that Thailand is beautiful and the water warm. Lay in the sun and go brown. Enjoy!!!

^^Yeah I read that book a few months ago, it made me determined never to go to the Bangkok Hilton.
I personally haven't been to Thailand, but I know that it's the same as Indonesia as far as pharmacuticals go, which means that as everyone else has said, go to the chemist.

As a Bangkokian and big party animal now in Australia, I can say that you will have a great time JJ!
I don't want to discourage you from having fun, but do be careful after hours. Due to a police crackdown on illegal drugs, there are regular raids at bars and clubs after 2am, so play it safe and leave by 2am, which is the official closing time now anyway. They do urine tests which you cannot refuse and you could go to jail.
If you go to the right places and meet the right people you can get what you are looking for. Try to make friends with other Western people, particularly those who are living there and are not just tourists at the bar or club. Be careful about any offers from local Thais in the bar - if they seem quite Westernized and speak good english it could be ok. And definitely Don't take up ANY offers from taxi or tuk tuk drivers.
Good places to go out at night are Ministry of Sound (Paul van Dyk will be there in November),Q Bar , Narcissus, Silom Soi 4 area (Tapas bar is my favourite)or Khao San Road is backpacker area.
If you are gay, Silom Soi 2 where you will be in heaven. :) hmmm...i miss my friends so much! :(
Pick up a Metro Magazine (www.bkkmetro.com) for entertainment and club listings.
Or if you want to get yourself a sexy suntan, head for Koh Samui,Koh Phangnan and Koh Tao islands in the south, and Krabi province (Railay Bay beach) on the other coast.
I hope you have a great time, and if you are lucky enough you will bump into my friends. ;)

Greetings Mayday,
Cool question.
"Farangs" is the Thai spelling for foreigner.
CB had a good write up of Thailand. Very well Done. I've been to Raleigh Beach (Phra-nang Bay)near Krabi years ago. It was totally awesome. I was travelling with a group of Poms and we found this place. It had pure warm blue water, wind-less clould free skies and a vibe that felt as though you were at the edge of the world where time stood still.
It is a truly wonderful place to visit, where you can just stop and rest your soul.
CYA !

Im going to thailand soon. Whats the legal situation in bringing back pharms? Are we allowed to have a three month supply or do we need a script? Interested in any info reguarding Viagra and Diazepam?

drugs and thailand are two words that should never be sued in the same sentence by a tourist imfho. have a ball but take care...

Hi jimjam, i was in thailand 3 years ago,in bangkok i found it no hassle at all getting your drug of choice in fact i found the locals very willing to help me out, never got ripped off at all,the locals told me its ok to take drugs just dont try to traffic the stuff,so every time i indulged i threw the rest in the bin,its very cheap to replace it,rather than get busted, also found the same down at koh samui, but much more relaxed as far as cops go,have fun.

Importing drugs into Australia is a serious offence. Valium/Diazepam is listed as a "schedule B" drug refer link below (of cause valium is clearly not a Schedule 9 drug in the Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Drugs and Poisons, ie like cannabis).
However, I can not warn you strongly enough against trying to bring back "schedule B" drugs into Australia without declaring. Oz/NZ treat otc drugs a lot more seriously than in the usa, so forget those USA websites which talk about importing and if it gets caught so be it.
A friend of mine was caught with a steroid subsance (schedule B) which he bought otc in asia. He was charged and had to go to court where he was fined several thousand dollars. He now has a criminal record in relation to drugs and is red-flagged by customs in Australia and overseas. Not what u want - makes getting visas tough in countries like usa, and u cannot rely on visa-waiver programs as u have a criminal record.
If you have a script and declare it you are fine. If you do not do either of these and are caught you will be charged with importing a controlled drug. Do a risk/benefit assessment and you'll realise it is not worth it.
And do not even think about mailing it to yourself. It will NEVER get through the x-ray machines in Australia, and you will be in deep shit if u are caught.
As for valium in thailand, readily available oc from all SMALL pharacies. Cost should be 3 baht per tablet, but 90% of places will try and charge 10-15 baht. Remember to get the blue ones which are 10mg.
Have fun - just leave the valiums in thailand!!!

awesome post Naturalflow, forgot i posted that question... heaps of info, it looks like we'll just have to eat everything we buy over there then :D
on a side note, i checked for Sildenafil (viagra) on those lists and it doesn't seem to be there. Accoring to that link we can bring in 3months supply with us, i'm supposing we would just have to declare it? Anyhow im gunna email the TGA and i'll post here the results

Just incase anyone is interested I got a reply to my email from the TGA...
"You may bring back with you on your person up to 3 months supply of unapproved Viagra from overseas. If asked, you must be able to demonstrate that the product has been prescribed for you, since this is a prescription only substance in Australia. You do not need to declare this substance to the Australian Customs Service as you clear customs."
