ok so i checked the movie out this past weekend and it was pretty trippy lol funny of course! its not really a kids movie more for older kids and adults . and of course you can tell this is all johnny depps imagination, it is dark no bright colors what so ever the characters are very well illustrated and ugly . this is basically fear n loathing cartoon :) in the beginning they have a extremely obvious fear n loathing skit were the character meets johnny deep and del torro for a few seconds on there way to vegas lol in the red convertible hint: the part were depp mentions the bat hit the windshield . it was pretty good i went blasted and enjoyed the heck out of it

I'm not sure how much creative license Depp had on this project. I think you're giving him too much credit.

actually no i think hes done to much acid imo and is kinda stuck in fear n loathing but the movie is pretty entertaining

I thought it was ok Depp was definatly channeling Hunter Thompson in parts of the movie. I love the fear and loathing reference at the beggining of the movie when Rango lands on the red convertable with Raoul Duke and his lawyer in it. The animation was pretty trippy which was cool. It was just too long the second half of the movie just drug on and on my friend actually fell asleep. Overall I would wait for the dvd.

There are a lot of references to famous Westerns from High Noon to Sergio Leone, and at certain points I felt like I was watching a crap animated version of Chinatown - even the eyes of the villain (a giant snake) looked exactly like the Eye of Sauron from Lord of the Rings. The difference between paying homage to famous films and just ripping them off is a fine one and hard to articulate - but I know it when I see it. This movie lacked originality, and was not as clever as it thought it was.

Character design and animation was top quality, but that just isn't enough nowadays with animated films. It's fine to kill some time, but not much else.

i liked it a lot, despite being in a miserable mood while watching it and splitting it into two halves (last night and this morning). i'd go so far as to say best non-pixar cgi film. the clear orientation towards an adult audience, taking the story seriously enough to injest serious consequence breaths much life into the characters.

4/5
