On Thursday november 15th VIVAIDS - Victorian Drug users' group - will hold our 3rd Annual Overdose Memorial Day.
Often when our friends and loved ones die as a result of overdose users do not get the "normal" opportunities to grieve. We may not hear about their death until after the funeral, and sometimes their family members can associate friends with the drug they perceive in their grief as having killed their loved one.
Offering a real opportunity for our community members to grieve, to provide the opportunity for a regular, public memorial to celebrate and commemorate the lives of those drug users who have dies as a result of overdose, and to protest the policies which contribute to OD, VIVAIDS has held our memorial days for the last three years.
This year we'll be starting with a non-religious service at the Collinst St baptist church, just up from the town hall in the city. That starts at 2pm.
Then we march to Parliament to lay flowers.
This year, for those who freak out inside church walls, we'll be having our first memorial wake (Collins St Baptist should not elicit this response, they are a venue which has heaps of non-religious stuff, and the church itself is a good friend to drug users in the city.)Join us at the Builders' Arms Hotel, cnr Gertrude and gore Sts Fitzroy from 4:30pm.
We also have a permanent memorial, the Overdose Quilt, Write the name of the special person you wish to remember on one of our stars and it will be sewn into the quilt.
