Child drug deals: 500,000 pills sold in playgrounds
By Ben Harvey
UP TO 500,000 dexamphetamine tablets are sold in WA school playground drug deals worth hundreds of thousands of dollars each year, authorities say.
Family doctors are the unwitting Mr Bigs of the trade in the attention deficit disorder drug.
They prescribed nearly 13 million dexamphetamine tablets last year - 90 per cent to school-age children.
Education Department acting director Kevin O'Keefe said the dexamphetamine trade was a growing problem but WA schools did not have an endemic drug problem. Hard drugs such as cocaine and heroin were extremely rare in schools, as shown by the lack of police involvement in school drug issues.
Police said dexamphetamines, which give a rush like the party drug speed when taken by non-ADD sufferers, are dealt in private and State schools. Seven students from Sacred Heart College, Sorrento, were forced out of the school for selling hundreds of "dexies" to classmates at 50¢ or $1 each last week.
The trade can be traced to doctors, who last year wrote 84,135 scripts for 16,636 patients in WA. More than 11 million tablets were prescribed for children. Many drug experts and several police said at least 5 per cent of tablets ended up in the wrong hands.
Health Minister Bob Kucera said he was concerned that dexamphetamine tablets were being sold in schools. He said WA Health Department chief psychiatrist George Lipton would soon present a policy direction for tackling over-prescription.
Perth general practitioner and former State vice-president of the Australian Medical Association Joe Kosterich said students had sold dexamphetamines for six years.
In 1988, doctors prescribed 44,000 tablets. Last year, they prescribed nearly 13 million. Police seizures of the drug have reflected that increase. Between 1998 and 1999, seizures of dexamphetamines by police rose 88.6 per cent. Last year tablets were found during 11,000 drug raids.
WA Pharmaceutical Association president Kevin McAnuff said he had heard of students intimidating other children to get their drugs.
Mr McAnuff said the number of tablets sold together should be restricted. "At the moment we have people walking out of a pharmacy with a bottle of 400 tablets," he said. "When you think that people can get up to $5 or $10 a tablet then you are looking at big money.
"It worries me when I see kids walking to school with 100 tablets on them. It's just a starting point for these kids. When they can't get enough of a rush from these things they move on to speed or other drugs."
Dexamphetamines are increasingly popular with nightclubbers seeking a cheap and convenient alternative to amphetamine powder.

I know i ued to give them out a bit...
A few friends used to crush them up and snort them, i tried it but didnt do too much for me...

Dexies do seem to be an ever increasing problem but I dont think its just the doctors who are to blame. Parents are all to quick to jump on ADD to diagnose their perfect little angel with a medical condition. All this just to make an excuse that it isnt their fault for their spoilt little brat terrorising the neighbourhood. Now this is a massive generalisation and some kids do suffer from ADD but I'd say it would be about 20% or less than the ammount actually prescibed. Parents would rather blame a medical condition than to look like bad parents.
Just a thought.

This article was definetely spurred by the expulsions at sacred heart in sorrento. MY OLD SCHOOL

I personally know 5 of the little guys that were expelled. These weren't bad kids.....
I hated my old school. In a spiteful way I'm happy they're getting bad publicity

On another note i think it's disgusting that so many young kids are prescribed speed *everyday*. Dexie kids often display similar psychological symptoms to speed addicts, imo. They don't learn how to socialise on a normal level. I think dexies should only be prescribed in extreme cases. Imagine living your teenage years without getting a good stiffy.

how many of our parents were subscribed a constant supply of amphet? It's sad that todays doctor's rely soo much on drugs when they should really be targetting the root of the problems. /alchemol speech

$5-$10 a tablet?!? damn these journalists at the newspaper are getting ripped off! hehehe

Bearing in mind that "Up to 500,000..." means literally anywhere between 1 and 500,000.
They could post "Up to 3,000,000..." and still be talking about the same figure.
They have no fucking clue, take it as a grain of salt.
Im sure the 'little tackers' dont keep receipts and get a grade7 accountant to pay their taxes on this income and as such would be making it almost impossible for 'authorities' to guestimate a number such as this.
We are supposed to believe that 1 in every 26 dexies prescribed in AUST ends up in the mouth of some fledgling druggie after he's had his play-lunch.
At least if its true, we should see a 'fat' drop in sexual violence reports on the playgrounds & football ovals as these pill-popping dudes slowly become speedFreaks in their highschool years and are subsequently NOT able to obtain erections and lose interest in sex all together.
Truth is, the only thing credible in any tabloid is the date.

Bwahahaha, nice work pundi... "would you like a point of meth with that beer sir?".

Yeah, Its not all the doctors fault either... The larger drug companies have been spending millions touting the benifits of this so called 'silver bullet' cure for ADD. This has resulted in stupid overprescription... One only has to look at Prozac, which is similarly given out at the drop of a hat at the mere suggestion of depression. This kind of crap is only going to continue if the FDA board is stacked with representatives that have ties with big pharmaceutical companies (thank Johnny Howard, and his perchant for sucking the dick
of corporate intrests for that one) If the whole industry was a bit more regulated and less money interested, this shit would never have happened. We now have the ironic situation of banned recreational drugs, yet the routine prescription of amphetamines to kiddies... Many of whom only display slight anecdotal references to ADD symptoms, and are not offered other forms of therapy.
What a complete fuckup.

I might sound like a real dumb arse here, but what exactly are dexies? Is it Tenuate 25?

Tenuate is a brand name for Diethylpropion HCl, which is also a CNS stimulant, usually prescribed for obesity management (according to RxList.com). The active ingredient is not Dexamphetamine, but Diethylpropion... this is contraindicated within 14 days of taking MAOIs to avoid hypertensive crisis.
Usual ADHD medications containing dexamphetamine are: Dexedrine, Spansule, Dextrostat, and generic equivalents... all contain Dextroamphetamine sulfate, usually in about a 5mg dose.
