NZ Herald said:
A 21-year-old has suffered a brain haemorrhage after taking two tablets of a legal party pill, leaving his memory and reasoning impaired.

The New Zealand Medical Journal today published the case, the first serious complication from the pills reported in medical literature.

The 21-year-old man, who was unnamed in the article, swallowed two party pills labelled "99.9 per cent-pure DMAA" along with a can of beer and a caffeine tablet.

DMAA, also known as geranamine, has become a popular ingredient in legal party pills after the Government banned BZP in early 2008.

It's important to note that New Zealand is a bit of a "ground zero" for legal highs, and there is a sizeable market of Joe Average punters who otherwise would never touch anything other than alcohol, and look down on people who "do drugs" - to explain, BZP was not seen as a drug, it was a "party pill". Back 5 years you could buy a packet of BZP along with your six-pack of lager.

Anyway this is an article worth reading, as it represents the first real medical investigation into DMAA.

yes, it's a vasoconstrictor. This has been sold in the US in bodybuilder supplements for years. Any idea how much this person ingested? How much is in "2 tablets"?

Previously, Gee and coworkers [6] reported a patient that purportedly ingested two “tablets” containing DMAA (later confirmed by analysis to contain 278 mg of DMAA per “capsule”: total dosage = 556 mg), along with 150 mg of caffeine and one can of beer.

That dose of DMAA is way higher than 75mg. It's similar to the situation with the deaths caused by bath salts which were actually caused by far too much MDPV. And the rare situation with 2C-x deaths which were actually caused by extreme overdose. It's the overdose that caused these substances to seem more dangerous than they are. Never take more than 75mg of DMAA. To counteract the vasocontriction, it would be good to stack DMAA with ginkgo.
