Alcohol has become cheaper than bottled water in New Zealand, with researchers warning there could be major implications for public health.

Published: 7:00AM BST 15 Oct 2010

Otago University researchers found that wine cost as little as 62 cents (29p) [US47¢] per standard drink, compared to 67 cents (31p) [US51¢] for 250ml of bottled water.

The study, published in the New Zealand Medical Journal, also found the relative price of alcohol had plummeted over the past decade as average wages increased.

"Our analysis suggests alcohol is now probably the cheapest recreational drug in New Zealand and has become increasingly affordable, at the same time as concern about binge drinking culture has grown," associate professor Nick Wilson said.

"International scientific evidence strongly indicates that cheap alcohol is a factor in promoting binge drinking by young people, and in increasing the overall size of the health and social harm from alcohol misuse."

It took researchers to find out the prices of wine and water?
Tough job they must have.

lucky them, alcohol is so fucking expensive in Canada, fucking tax's, and they call them "sin tax's" that is worse, that's enough reason to abolish them because sin implies religion, and religion and state should be separate in Canada,

It's like that in the Bahamas.. A handle of Bacardi rum cost like $8-10 and case of water is like twice that

eh a monster and a monster with vodka are the same price, with vodka its a bit cheaper.

but yeah the real drinks are like $40+

Bottled water is a completely unfair comparison. Tap water is definitely cheaper than alcohol.

^Yeah, tap water is cool if you like ingesting barium, fluoride, nitrate, bromate, lead, copper, gross beta emitters, atrazine, simazine, lindane, trihalomethanes, chloroform, bromodichloromethane, bromoform, dibromochloromethane, etc, etc.

Tap water is fun to drink if you enjoy slowly poisoning yourself.

^I doubt the levels of those poisons in tap water is high enough to cause serious damage and to make it something that should be avoided.

Alcohol is fun to drink if you enjoy quickly poisoning yourself :p

i have to favor high prices for destructive elements like tobacco & alcohol, since we can't get rid of them entirely, or even avoid them anywhere.
cheap anything isn't worth drinking anyway ... but enjoying an Oregon microbrew is a different experience than drinking to get drunk.
