Autopsy: Cocaine a factor in Billy Mays' death

August 7 2009

(CNN) -- An autopsy report issued Friday by Hillsborough County, Florida, cites cocaine as a contributing factor in the death of TV pitchman Billy Mays, who died in June at age 50.

The Hillsborough County medical examiner's office said cocaine use contributed to Billy Mays' heart disease.

"Mays died from a lethal arrhythmia of the heart caused by hypertensive and arteriosclerotic heart disease," the county said in a statement attributed to Dr. Leszek Chrostowski, the associate medical examiner who conducted the autopsy.

"He further concluded that cocaine use caused or contributed to the development of his heart disease, and therefore contributed to his death," it added.

The fact that toxicology tests detected only breakdown products of cocaine, not the drug itself, led Chrostowski to conclude that Mays had used cocaine "in the few days prior to death but not immediately prior to death."

Cocaine is a stimulant that can raise blood pressure and thicken the wall of the left ventricle of the heart, one of the organ's four main pumping chambers.

The autopsy also found low concentrations of ethyl alcohol "consistent with social consumption of a few beverages" as well as the narcotic drugs hydrocodone, oxycodone and tramadol. Mays had prescriptions for the drugs -- which were found in therapeutic or subtherapeutic concentrations -- to ease hip pain.

In addition, the tests found evidence of two tranquilizers -- alprazolam (Xanax) and diazepam (Valium) -- which are commonly prescribed for a variety of ailments, including anxiety and insomnia. Both drugs were determined to be in therapeutic or subtherapeutic concentrations.

Mays was found dead at his home near Tampa on June 28.

Mays, with his booming voice, was famous for fronting products such as OxiClean and Orange Glo in TV commercials.

This really isn't anybody's business but the family. It's sad that this is making headline news. If he died of cirrhosis it would probably fly under the radar. Instead, it makes a good story for everyone to chuckle at because his use of stimulants fit his TV persona.

Autopsy: Cocaine contributed to Billy Mays' death

TAMPA, Fla. – An official autopsy report released Friday found that cocaine use contributed to the heart disease that suddenly killed TV pitchman Billy Mays in June, but his family called the finding "speculative" and considered getting an independent look at the results.

The Hillsborough County medical examiner's office previously determined that the bearded, boisterous TV spokesman had a heart attack in his sleep. His wife found him unresponsive in bed in their Tampa condo June 28.

Mays, 50, was a pop-culture fixture with his energetic commercials pitching gadgets and cleaning products like Orange Glo and OxiClean.

While heart disease was the primary cause of death, a report released Friday by the medical examiner listed cocaine as a "contributory cause of death."

The medical examiner "concluded that cocaine use caused or contributed to the development of his heart disease, and thereby contributed to his death," the office said in a press release.

The office said Mays last used cocaine in the few days before his death but was not under the influence of the drug when he died. Hillsborough County spokeswoman Lori Hudson said nothing in the toxicology report indicated the frequency of Mays' cocaine use.

"We were totally unaware of any non-prescription drug usage and are actively considering an independent evaluation of the autopsy results," Mays' family said in a statement.

The statement said the family was "extremely disappointed" by the release of the information by the medical examiner's office. The report "contains speculative conclusions that are frankly unnecessary and tend to obscure the conclusion that Billy suffered from chronic, untreated hypertension, which only demonstrates how important it is to regularly monitor one's health."

Cocaine can raise the arterial blood pressure, directly cause thickening of the left wall of the ventricle and accelerate the formation of atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries, the release said.

The toxicology tests also showed therapeutic amounts of painkillers hydrocodone, oxycodone and tramadol, as well as anti-anxiety drugs alprazolam and diazepam. Mays had suffered hip problems and was scheduled for hip-replacement surgery the day after he was found dead.

Longtime friend and colleague AJ Khubani, founder and CEO of the "As Seen on TV" product company Telebrands, said Mays never exhibited any signs of drug use and was always prepared for his many commericial shoots.

"I'm just shocked," Khubani said. "He was the model of a responsible citizen."

Mays, a McKees Rocks, Pa., native, developed his style demonstrating knives, mops and other "As Seen on TV" gadgets on Atlantic City's boardwalk. For years he worked as a hired gun on the state fair and home show circuits, attracting crowds with his booming voice and genial manner.

He got his start on TV on the Home Shopping Network and then branched out into commercials and infomercials. He developed such a strong following that he became the subject of a reality TV series, Discovery Channel's "Pitchmen."

The propaganda machine keeps spinning. The doctors shift the blame to the illicit drug. I'm suprised they didn't mention some other politically incorrect nonsense like he ate fast food or something.

The guy had heart problems and was likely quite worried (justifiably so) about his hip replacement surgery the next day. It's a scary thing to go under a surgeon's knife and bone saw.

I don't see why they blame cocaine. They didn't even find cocaine, they found benzoylecgonine. I think that ethanol + alprazolam + diazepam + tramadol + hydrocodone + oxycodone could explain the issues. Tramadol alone, actually, perhaps.

Most of that lowers blood pressure, though.

"Billy Mays here for Peruvian Fishscale!"

I don't really care what he died from or what he used, but I could imagine him pitching all types of intoxicants if they were legal and their advertising was allowed.

It is sad that this guy is being publicly shamed for drug use. Now you don't even have to die of an overdose you just have to have them in your system at the time of your death for the media to make a story out of it.

Fuck the media, some things are news and some things are private matters, this is a private matter that they should of kept their nose out of.

all those downers constantly being mixed with coke, definitely bad for the heart.

oh well.. sucks for his family to have to hear this news

Another addict bites the dust

You'll still hear him screaming at you about the Awesome Auger or KaBOOOM or whatever the fuck he's pushing. Loud motherfucker.

RIP jackass

The pusher of OxiClean was pushed over by Oxycontin. Oh the irony.

I always knew he used cocaine (because of how he talks in all caps) and OxyContin (because of OxyClean) and would joke about it, and now I see its true, all I can say is I was right!

It is a shame though, he was a cool guy, thought he was hilarious.
