NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) - The North Platte Housing Authority board has suspended its drug-testing policy while it discusses the legality of the policy with it lawyers.
The move came Monday night after the Nebraska chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union had threatened to sue if the authority continued to test employees for drugs.
The Nebraska ACLU had said court precedent allows drug testing of government employees only if there are reasonable grounds to suspect drug use or when employees occupy safety-sensitive positions, such as guards who carry guns.
The civil liberties watchdog says the housing authority's policy of testing groundskeepers and office staff violates the employees' rights.
