last night i watched a clever little ultra low budget film
the magician
made for close to nothing by a few mates and no crew in 10 days, and then submitted for financing for post editing and distribution, this fictional documentary makes use of the hand held camera far better than any of the commercial hits.
it's gritty and yet very sincere realism are both its greatest strengths and weaknesses. on one hand you really connect with and believe the stuff you see, on the other there is no real serious dramatic ride.
whilst unsatisfying on a story and plot perspective and much of the dialogue is mediocre at best, i have found myself thinking about all today, and the more i ponder it, the more i respect what was achieved with the limitations of what they were working with.
