my initial reaction to the plot was "i can't believe they're all taking this so well" but, in the short making-of feature, the writer says she wanted to explore what would happen if a community dealt with a situation like this in a uniformly compassionate way.

the story here is quirky and enjoyable. the cast is pretty much note perfect - the 5 main characters are all played wonderfully by their respective actors.

i was left with increased respect for ryan gosling, a wish that emily mortimer would appear in next to everything i watch and a crush on kelli garner :)

rate it!

i was really not liking this movie up until like the last 20 minutes or so. then it somehow won me over.

i like Kelli Garner as well, but i thought she looked terrible in this film. not the hotness of films like Thumbsucker, and Dreamland that i'm used to.

overall, a decent comedy and very good advertisement for the Real Doll company. 3/5

Kind of sad, though there were a number of funny scenes. Overall I thought it was a solid movie. The acting by all the characters was really good and it was interesting to see their characters progress throughout.

I thought this movie was fantastic.

The liked the idea behind the story. It is much more contrsuctive for an entire community to maintain an open mind and show tolerance to others rather than isolate and ridicule them

I thought this movie was great, i actually cried.

Over a doll?
Sad i know.

But Ryan Gosling really impressed me in this.

i'm not gonna read all the responses yet because if i read anything negative it will bug me through the entire movie, but i just rented this last night and intend to watch it either tonight or tomorrow. :)

somewhat of a spoiler in here!

ok so i just watched it today. i loved it. i agree with everyone that the acting was great, but the casting in general was spot on in my opinion. i felt the frustration that gus felt and i believed the delusions that lars believed. i thought they all did an amazing job of personifying the doll to the point where i think you could almost hear her when she "talked" to lars and you could almost tell when she was unconscious and dying towards the end. i haven't seen a movie that made me smile then practically hug my tv so many times. it was such a great movie all together and it did a great job of evoking emotion. i hate to become someone who thinks every movie i see is so great, but i think i've been doing a good job lately of picking movies that i would enjoy because i haven't not enjoyed any movies i've voluntarily watched for a while. i say voluntarily because i just saw "the program" against my will today for the first time and it was fucking wretched. :D

Finally saw this movie! I really liked it so much. It was so funny, so cute and heart warming.

I totally agree with a lot of what you said, ryanlaughlin, about Bianca. I loved the way the community reacted to her and supported her, it made me, as the viewer, view her more and more as a real person as the film went on and I was TOTALLY sad at the end when she ...

died.

Emily Mortimer and Patricia Clarkson were both just delicious. Wonderful actresses, loved them both so much in their roles. Ryan Gosling was marvelous too. I didn't care for Kelli Garner, I thought she was just atrocious looking. She looked like an unbathed 9 year old for most of the film, dressed like a child with greasy, stringy hair, it made it difficult to want her and Lars to get together. That is besides the point though because she didn't really detract from my viewing experience, I just did not care for her. I do not think I have seen her in anything else though so perhaps maybe she is not that bad.

Glad I finally saw this film though and glad I liked it so much, 4 out of 5 stars!
