Since a child I have always like working in the garden with my parents. But in 2001, I did a government training program specialising in Bush Regeneration (called Green Corps). From there I developed an interest in plants and have gone on to work in a number of nurseries.

I now love potplants.

I have heaps of them. Plants ive scavenged, grown from cutting or seed, plants ive inherited and plants I have bought.

I am particarly proud of this one...

My Wollemi Pine.
A recently discovered tree found growing in the Wollemi National park north west of Sydney in small numbers.

I could rave on for pages, but to start with... Tell us about your experiences with potplants.

:D

Where did u score that mate?

I heard they were going for a pretty penny.

Oh and for the record I hate pot.

I should take a pic of my ficus. Its an amazing story, somehow it grew from between the bricks half way up my house. That was about 2 years ago and I transplanted it into a pot and kept it inside, its gone gangbusters and now its to big for inside so i am trying to decide the best spot.

I really love it and want to watch it grow but if i plant it outside then its there till i get kicked out and the place is bulldozed along with it.

If i put it in a park then i cant watch it everyday.

Im torn and dunno what to do.

Ideas anyones?

Potplants die around me :( Even those bamboo thingies which aren't meant to die.

But we have had one potplant which seems to have survived nearly a year, in the lounge, despite it having brown tips on the leaves. I water, I don't know what more they want! :(

We have a few dracenas in the house, they're really easy to propogate. In fact, they are all from a really large dracena that was outside at my parents place... it was there when mum and dad bought the place - 1980... so really, these ones are 25 years old! 8o

As for outside, we have a heap of potted plants, cacti and succulents. There are secret squirrel ones i won't mention on here (to protect the innocent ;)) but we have more dracenas, a betel nut palm (actually, it's just been planted in the ground), about 4 orchids in pots, som mother-in-law tongue (again, about the same ages as the dracenas). :)

SLM- Brown tips are an indication of the plant drying out. They best way to make sure the root system is fully watered is to soak the pot in the bath or a bucket. Also they need the foliage to get wet so I have my Wollemi out in the rain atm.

Maz Mates of mine chipped in a bought me mr Wollemi for my 25th last year. I did an assignment on them at Uni the year before and downloaded every (about 20) research paper and followed the whole release to the market of them, I was obsessed. (Maz maybe you could plant your fig on the nature strip, i've done that here with a few things)

Another favorite is this Bunya pine ive been growing. (related to Wollemia)

I like plants out in the backyard....they get sad in pots. :(

If the weather is right this weekend I am going to repot a 30 year old juniper

not entirely true... some plants, yes, but some, such as orchids, are happy in either a pot, or in the groove of a tree. My dracenas are thriving in pots... as long as you keep repotting them as necessary, they're happy. Healthy green leaves let me know that. :D I liken them to living in a nice apartment, and eventually they'll buy some land and build a house.

=D

^ only funny thing michael moore has ever done

Well, that and when he got a group of people who'd lost their voice boxes through cancer caused by smoking to sing Xmas carols through their vocoders in front of Phillip Morris. :D But then, maybe i was the only one who found that funny. :\

I like this thread. I have nothing to contribute to it tho.....so I'll quietly shuffle outta the door..........................................

i am in love with pot plants but i have none as its really hard to cart them from bunnings or big w or wherever on public transport :(

Klue, I took your advice and watered our indoor potpant with lots and lots of water on the weekend, and ended up soaking the carpet requring several bathtowels to mop up . ooops.
Dale was unimpressed :D

I guess I should have sat it in the bath or something.

^ Dear oh dear. :(

Dale would've been more unimpressed if you had used a watering can full of fish emulsion. Pheww! Hehe

This is probably my most expensive cacus or succulent. (Well, the one I payed the most for)

Depending on the plant and what the problem looks like, this could be due to pretty much anything. Over-watering, under-watering, over-fertilisation (particularly nitrogen), poor aeration at the root zone (although this could be tied in with over-watering), or even disease such as fungus. If Klue's advice of giving it a good watering doesn't help it, post a pic.
