Hey was just reading Bill Brysons : Down Under and throughout the entire book he refers to Australias Indigenous people as Aborigines just was wondering a few things since I've never even heard of them before.

Are they white? black? brown? red?
Are most of the people racist towards them? It seems so according to the book but it was written almost 7 years ago.
What language do they speak
Are they actually called Aborigines?

Have you ever seen a red person who wasn't sunburnt? ;) They're brown/black. They speak English mostly, although some also still speak their native language/s.

Yes there is racism. There's racism still everywhere in the world. But I don't think the average Australian is racist towards Aboriginies. Lots of issues remain though - to do with Australia's "colonising" of the Aboriginal people, the orignial owners of our land, whether we should say "sorry" for what has been done to them in the past - and a lot of social and health issues that are still being struggled with.

You'll probably be walking on thin ice with this thread; Australia and their indigineous people is a contentious topic ;)
 
Well they're Black Indigenous people native to Australia.

As for the language most today do infact speak English with alot of Cuzzie Bro (slang for mate). However before white man came almost EVERY tribe (in each different area) spoke a different type of language, however most were very similar.

Yes there has been ALOT of racist remarks made towards them, even when you go as far back as when good old whitey landed in Van Deimen Land.

Although Aboriginies is a common word for Australian Indigenous People, alot of other countries also use that word for their native people i.e. the Cook Island Aboriginals etc.
 
I think most people are racist toward them in one way or another, they are an extremely disadvantaged minority in our country for alot of reasons.

As a fellow countryman of the OP I have to say I'm very much surprised he hasn't heard of them. We grew up with stuff like Skippy and Crocodile Dundee etc. :)

And I don't think that giving them an extra queue on phones like Telstra, ATO & the Police (i.e. press option 5 if Torres Strait or Aboriginal) really gives them anything. Perhaps we should take the American way, let's give them a Casino and build it on top of Ayres Rock :)
 
I live in perth and here we have th nyoongar abo's, they're like the pits of the abo community, so much so, that even other abo's hate on them.

I try my hardest not be racist myself, but once you've been hounded for money/smokes/booze that many times, it gets hard no to be racist, they contribute fuck all to the country and expect everything in return...
 
^^^Without sounding immoral I completly concur with that. It's hard to try and be without anger/frustration when the majority of the time you come in contact with a race of people is when they're being completly Cliche'

You can't better yourself if nobody gives you the opportunity to do so. Not many people want to give Aborigines jobs.

So these people don't fit with your white middle class ideals ? How upsetting for you , try being them for a year or so then speak about what you learned not what you *think*

thats complete bullshit. a cop out. the kind that most people are sick to death of. i know blacks who were GLAD to be taken during the so called "stolen generation", nothing like the stereotypical black that you see hassling people for whatever. people who walk with pride and carry themselves like human beings, not animals. not with mountainous chips on their shoulders expecting the world to owe them a living. i had to be taken from my parents when i was young, suffering a terrible childhood. did i let that stand in the way ?. no. the differance in their lives is their attitudes towards it. racism is the same throughout the world. deal with it or just go back to living in the bush like you used to.

its the same for everyone in life, you either stand up and fight, or you sit in the hole and whinge. to those, i pay no mind. cos you see, even if you dont make it, you can still walk with your head held high for your efforts, no one can take that away from you. ;)


lets here some success stories from ANY minority who would like to share some good news about overcoming the odds...
 
^ I guess this is as cultural/upbringing type of thing though ? you were removed and brought up in the traditional western way , so this is how you perceive the world!
Most communication is non verbal these people know/sense you look at them like lower caste!
And behave accordingly !
 
wrong. i was bought up heavily influenced in eastern philsophy. for the first 12 years anyway. before you pretend to know... and these people were also put into "western" style families.(whatever that means)
the ones that i meet in the city i work, i treat like i do ALL other people, i dont give beggars money because we have welfare. if you cant make your money stretch, expecially if you are not paying any rent, you shouldnt be making it any one elses problem. but i have got to know PLENTY of them, because i feel the best gift i can offer them is to listen.

the problem is, the problem with the world is, people are inherently slack. they want the quick fix, the magic pill, the 2 minute way to sexy abs.

these people NEVER accomplish their goals because there are NO short cuts to life. hard work brings not only results, but a sense of pride and more importantly a level of self esteem. one of the most successful football coaches in the history of australian rules fotball, foster williams, lives by a simple creed. "no excuses"

so simple, to remain true to yourself, but which is the hardest thing to do in life.

I think the reason why most people here in aus. have a bad image of aborigines is simply because alot of them *arent* "successful" according to our society.
I would guess partly due to the fact that we basically came along, told them to start living a totally different life to what they were used to.

They never had alcohol before 200 years ago either - so I would guess they have no tolerance like other races which would have built over hundreds/thousands of generations. They certainly seem to have much higher levels of alcoholism than the rest of the population, whether this is due to society or physiology.
