I'm glad I finally got around to watching this beautiful film.

It's essentially the love child of Catcher in the Rye and Gatsby and does an absolutely phenomenal job of annihilating the super-rich American elite. Having grown up with a lot of people like Igby's family, it is my personal opinion that the children of extremely wealthy families are infinitely more warped than the worst middle class and poverty-hugging rascals out there. In general, vast quantities of money just seem to dehumanize people in a fundamental way. The film was beautiful in its treatment of upper class American society and the puncturing of the American Dream.

Aside from that general observation, the story is touching and manages to stay grounded in a coming of age story. It is extremely well constructed with terrific acting all around. I mean the casting for every single part in this film is of superior totemic quality like you'll find in only a handful of films ever made. Every single actor nailed their part. Who knew there was so much talent in the Culkin clan?

Naturally, acting is nothing if there's nothing to work with. The narrative and dialogue consistently flirt with perfection. Absolutely amazing characters across the board.

To round it off, the soundtrack is badass (though I wish in the closing montage they would have used the original and not a cover) and meshes perfectly with the film.

A super underrated but remarkable movie. I put it in my top 10.

film: igby goes down

i enjoyed this, too
but right now only have time to add a poll

^^
Subtle is a great word for that movie. Subtly over the top. The ending, how they deal with their mother, is really pretty absurd in a symbolic kind of way, but it's still within the scope of that world's reality.

Liked it, haven't seen it in about 2 years so my memory of the movie is kind of hazy. All I remember is some rich kid who runs away.

Quoted for truth.

Kieren Culkin really brought that role to life. I don't even like Ryan Philipe, but I felt he was prefectly smarmy for the role.

I don't know what it's like to be the fucked up progeny of a wealthy family, but that is one of the great things about this movie... it is something that almost everyone can relate to... just in a rediculous way. Everything is SO satirically blown out of proportion in a beautiful way.

I loved this flick.

The commentary on the DVD is awesome.

I probably would have liked this movie if I were about 10 years younger when I could have related to Igby more.
But at 30, I just thought Igby was a self-absorbed immature little shit who needs to get over himself and accept that the world is the way it is wether he likes it or not.
I probably don't like this movie cause it's an all-too-accurate portrayal of how I used to see the world.
