A Sydney man has been charged in an Italian airport after allegedly being found with millions of dollars of cocaine in his luggage.
The 30-year-old allegedly flew into Rome's Leonardo De Vinci Airport from Venezuela on August 15 and was found with 10kg of cocaine in a false bottom of his bag.
Tests showed the cocaine was 85 per cent pure with an estimated street value of $8 million.
A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said the Australian government was providing consular assistance after he was charged with drug trafficking.
The man allegedly said he was a former police officer, but an identity card indicated he was a security guard.
He was reportedly travelling on an Australian passport, with a Sydney address.
If found guilty the man faces up to 20 years in jail.
