This rap-world story, perhaps not surprisingly, is built on generic components, like rap itself. It's from the "There's-a-barn, let's-put-on-a-show" type of musical. In this savvy update, DJay (Terrence Howard) is distressed, fearing that he's becoming just another bum, in his case a low-level pimp. Dragging around in his beater with his ho, a plucky bottle-blonde (Taryn Manning), he rags on himself but doesn't do anything to change his world. Inspired by a chance meeting with a high school chum, Key (Anthony Anderson), who has kept to his dream by staying in music, DJay admits that he's only been talking the talk and needs to walk the walk.

DJay gets to writing rap lyrics, and things pop -- especially when Key brings in a scrawny white kid (DJ Qualls) whose beat machine is torqued by his blues/country knowledge. Operating out of an egg-carton-lined sound stage, the three hook and spark.

What's best about this "Hustle" is that screenwriter-director Brewer transcends his generic story, laying out his beat from each character's heart. We come to know their inner fears and demons, including those of some particularly well-drawn supporting characters.

I saw this last night and really enjoyed it; it was gritty, well-acted and tugged at my heart. Anyone else?

I want to see it....I've heard it's a pretty good watch even if someone doesn't know much at all about the genre of music, and I've also heard it described as like the Rocky of rap music (haha) :)

good movie right here mang!, i give it at 3.875... , "you know its hard out here for a pimp, when he tryin to get this money for the rent"

bump...

what a great fucking movie this is

i enjoyed this movie very much. from the title and trailer it appeared to be some weak wanna be ghetto ass story about making it big in the rap industry. then i saw it and was very suprised as to how good the cinematography and acting was.

It was good, worth watchin, but not as good as it was hyped up to be. I liked when they actually started making the music, his life was pretty fuckin lame and boring otherwise.

I hunted down this movie after seeing it had nominations at the mtv movie awards last year. I thought if mtv were giving it nominations it must be ok.

After watching it I really liked it hey. There were a few scenes that were a drag and unbearable like when he was kicking one of his ho's (the one with the baby) out of his house. But most of the movie was great imho.

The lyrics to the raps were catchy and unique and had a real flow to them.

Really liked this movie. Had a good effect on me!

I effin love this movie....finally saw it on DVD last weekend. I enjoyed myself thoroughly.

i'm gonna have to go to blockbuster and find this movie. pray to god that they have it, because i will go compleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetely apeshit on the first person I see in a blue polo shirt if they don't. It's fucking intolerable how shit the selections are. Maybe they're just lying and spiting me for not returning a single video I ever rented, but maybe I'm just spiting them for not having the shit I actually WANTED then ending up enjoying something I didn't even want and keeping it. I should open up my own fucking video store where I only carry shit that blockbuster DOESNT carry. Imagine the money i'd make... I can see the escalade with monitors in the visors and headrests already

I'm glad you can vote "one star" twice in this poll! It was that terrible.

It was pretty good.

Terrence Howard plays the same character in almost every movie though. Check out Dead Presidents and youll see what I am talking about.

i've given up on "black movies"

boyz in tha hood to mention one amongst many were awesome movies.

now we get these one dimension thugs who create their own misery and the only image hollywood has to paint of them is broke ass morons who can't escape their reality and follow pipe dreams.

find something new and less played out. There's black people out there that do more than rap and dance for a dolla from whitey. Lets try to broaden our horizons here.
