I have terrible insomnia. I got prescribed temazepam for it but I need to take at least 200mg to knock myself out and don't have any at the moment.

Whats the best OTC med here in oz you can get that is guaranteed to put me to sleep? I'll chug down two bottles/packets as long as it has no ill side effects and will put me to sleep for sure.

Tell the Dr the temazepam isn't working and ask them to suggest some other way to treat your insomnia. If you're already being treated for it, I seriously think that it would be a good idea to continue working on a solution to the problem with your GP.

BigTrancer :)

PS: Search for "pharmacy sleep" the question you're asking has been discussed at length in some threads here.

You're taking 200mg to knock you out? That seems pretty excessive. If that doesn't work, I doubt that OTC stuff is going to help you.

As BT said, sounds like a trip to the GP might be in order

200mg of temazepam ? dude your doctor is a fool, hes giving you the wrong benzo, ask him for rivotril (clonazepam). 1mg clonazepam = 40mg temazepam (iirc).

Xanax works me wonders when i need to get to sleep, the best benzo imo.

Yeah I have finally made a trip to the doc after far too long of interrupted sleep and trouble getting to and staying alseep. we're talking at least 6 years

He gave me some stilnox (see recent thread) which was great for a week getting some decent shut eye but I was wide awake last night and feel fuzzy the next day after I had taken it. I suppose you can't have everything.

If I was to go back and say listen I feel fuzzy the next day and by day 20 I became almost immune to it then what would he probably give me? Any ideas anyone.

Also when you do goto the Doctors do yuo ask for something specific? I have one friend who goes in and asks for whatever and he gives it to her no Q's asked. I have never had the balls for that.

Is Xanax specifically for sleep or anxiety/stress like Valium?

While there isn't usually much in the way of effective OTC sleep meds. I do find some use from 'Restavit' which contain the anti-histamine Doxylamine I believe. Due to having a large and frustrating tolerance to benzodiazapines I can have 10 Rohypnol and not tire but can have or add two or three Restavits into the mix and be out like a light. I am aware that all the CNS depressants do increase the effects of each other. Never-the -less try 'Restavit.:\

Taking that amount of benzos is going to lead you down a bad road. For an OTC method, I would also suggest Doxylamine (sold as restavit) Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is also very sleepy. I would use these over dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) as they are probably safer.

Remember that these drugs can interact badly with others, check a MIMS annual or Martindale first. No alcohol either.

Maybe a better way to approach this would be to book yourself into a sleep clinic and find out why you're not sleeping or have such bad insomnia....that's excessive, 200 mg temazapam to get to sleep, you will end up addicted very quickly.

I find it EXTREMELY hard to believe that any doctor would prescribe you enough temazepam to take 200mg per night. Even if you had 2 ort 3 docs on the roll, it seems unsustainable. Obviously you are not sleeping for a reason. Find out what that is and deal with it.

The doc didn't prescibe me 200mg Temazepam a night to get to sleep. He said take ONE pill(10mg) when needed. I ended up having to use the whole bottle just to get to sleep.

Mirtazapine worked well for sleep. But I'm up to 75mg a night and it's sedative effects have Greatly reduced and I don't want to take more and more of that anti Depressant.

My insomnia is even worse now because I just broke up with my GF, so thats not exactly helping me sleep any smoother. My GP isn't eager to write out prescriptions. But I guess I'll try this Benadryl stuff and if it doesn't help go back to the GP and maybe see a specialist, thx guys.

Restavit leave me feeling extremely groggy/fuzzy headed for most of the next day after taking it.

Have you tried Melatonin? It's a hormone which, among other things, regulates our sleep cycles. I've found that taking a supplement of this (3-6mg or so) significantly helps me drift off. It won't knock you out like most sleep aids, it just makes nodding off easier. It can mean the difference between falling asleep in 10 mins or 4 hours for me. I don't experience insomnia as bad as I used to, so I only take it once or twice a week but there was a period when I was using it every day and noticed no tolerance buildup at all. Unfortunately this isn't available OTC (don't get the herbal remedies.. they contain very little melatonin) and I haven't come across a pharmacy that stocks it, so you'll need to get a prescription then send it to a compounding chemist who will mail it to you. I'd give you the name of the compounding chemist I order through, but I think this may be against the forum guidelines (could a mod PM me if this is okay?).

Your doctor shouldn't have a problem prescribing Melatonin as long as he's familiar with it. If he isn't, you may need to do some research to convince him, as it isn't listed in MIMS. It has a very low potential for abuse as there is nothing remotely resembling a high while under its influence and the only withdrawl I've ever experienced through not taking it is the return of the symptoms I was using it to treat.

The side effects of Melatonin are not really known... However i do suggest that you give it a try to help you.

You can get it over the internet, or as Theyellowdart has described the method of which to obtain it.

There is a compounding chemist (read: proper chemist) in my area, i will also disclose this information if it is OK.
