DOM and ROLAND Saturday 19th February 2005...

Dom & Roland Biog January 2004

The original plan was for Dom to finish his A levels, go to University and become an architect. However, that was before he realised that music was in his bones and that it had to be given an outlet. So the plan became; leave school halfway through A-levels, go on studio engineering course and become a bar-manager to make ends meet. Once again a decent career tossed aside for the love of music...

It was always going to be like this. Dom spent five years of his early childhood in Germany due to his father’s career as an opera singer and then followed the traditional route from Hip Hop via Breakbeat into the growing jungle scene - a journey inspired in particular by early, dark, Reinforced tracks, Doc Scott’s seminal ‘N.H.S’ EP and films like ‘Bladerunner’. It was only a matter of time before he somehow found his way into the creative, production side of Drum & Bass.

1994 - 2000
Whilst working as bar-manager, Dom was able to scrape enough money together to purchase a Roland 760, and with this began to write and produce tracks. As he finished each tune he would take it into No U-Turn’s studio to do the final mixdown. While there, Nico (No U-Turn’s label boss) saw Dom’s potential and started a new label called Saigon. SAG01 ‘Wax Rhythmical’, SAG02 ‘The Bells’ & SAG03 ‘The Definition E.P’ followed.

On the strength of this early success, Dom persuaded his bank manager to lend him enough money to upgrade his home studio so he could do everything at home and began writing more tracks, this time for Moving Shadow. Several releases followed (‘Cutting Edge’ SH75, ‘The Planets’ SH81, ‘Interstellar Jazz’ SH89 and ‘The Storm’ SH97), each one enhancing his reputation as one of the scenes growing influences. This reputation was cemented still further when Dom was chosen to collaborate on Moving Shadow’s 100th release, ‘Distorted Dreams’ (SH100) along with Rob Playford, and Goldie. In these early evolutionary years Dom also had high profile releases on Doc Scott’ s ’31 Recordings’ imprint and Grooverider’s ‘Prototype’ label.

Having built up his own studio, Dom now found himself engineering and producing tracks for other Drum & Bass DJs/Artists who did not yet know how to use studio equipment themselves. During this time Dom mixed and produced various Drum & Bass classics including ‘Mutant Revisited’ and ‘Sonar’ with Trace and ‘Subway’ and ‘Skylab’ among others with Ed Rush. It was for this first collaboration with Trace, that Dom created the now legendary ‘Tramen’ break, a break that has been sampled in Drum & Bass tracks ever since, not just by Trace, but also by the likes of Ray Keith, Bad Company, Adam F and J Magik, to name a few. Around this time Dom, who had already been working with Matrix (an old school friend), began working with his brother Optical (already an accomplished engineer), and having enticed him out of the darker realm of techno, proceeded to introduce him to Ed Rush - one of Dom’s former collaborators. Ed Rush & Optical went on to become the duo we now know as the multi-talented Virus.

Since then Dom has worked with Drum & Bass stars past and present, as well as having completed many remixes for independent and major labels including electronic music pioneers ‘Art Of Noise’. Dom regularly plays on radio, including guest slots on Radio1, Kiss 100, Radio Nova (Paris), as well as various other radio shows from Iceland to Australia.

Autumn 1998 saw the long awaited release of Dom’s first album, ‘Industry’ - to unanimous public and critical acclaim. Drawing on his wide background of musical influences, Dom’s album presented the listener with a variety of textures and styles fused together with his unique style of hard, dark sounds. The tracks ‘Thunder’ and ‘Connected’ (both on the album) had been rinsed on dubplate by the Top DJ s for at least six months before the LP was released, so when the first 12” ‘Timeframe’ (SH123) came out it was an instant hit. This album was so popular on its first two weeks of release that it went in at No.3 on the Music Week Independent Album Chart, with only ‘Tribe Called Quest’ and ‘Lauren Hill’ beating it to the top slot.

Since then Dom has kept up the pressure with a string of superb releases. ‘Parasite’ (SH131), ‘Killa Bullet’ (SH135) and the reworking of ‘Kaotic Kemistry’ under the guise Known Unknown has cemented his reputation as one of the UK’s most talented producers. His subsequent release, ‘Can’t Punish Me’ caused major disruption on dancefloors all over the UK, with almost blanket radio coverage from specialist radio shows and the pirates. However, it was the inclusion of Dom’s ‘Terrorist’ limited edition remix on the Killa Bites (ASH25) trilogy that really blew the public away. It proved to be so popular that it sold out in one day. The Killa Bites series allowed Dom to select a number of tracks from the office demo pile of previously unheard of artists including Rascal & Clone who are now rising up the scene’s hierarchy with speed, to mix with already established artists such as Rymetyme and Bad Company.

2001
After this Dom released the ‘MSX’ EP ‘Midnight Club’ (MSXEP8) including tracks from the Playstation 2 game of the same name, among these the now famous ‘Imagination’ which has since had the remix treatment from Kemal and Rob Data.

2002
For Dom’s next EP, he paired up with Keaton from Usual Suspects who had just moved in ‘round the corner’ and wanted Dom to teach him how to use Logic Audio (Dom’s sequencer of choice). The result of this collaboration was ‘Archaeon’ and ‘Twisted City’ combined with Dom’s tracks ‘Sandgun’ and ‘The Voyage’.

Kemal featured again on Dom’s second album, on the track ‘Moulin Rouge’, along with Keaton providing insight on ‘Mordor’, another two highly praised tracks. As well as a couple of new solo tracks, the main purpose of this album was to provide a mixed back catalogue of some of Dom’s favourite production moments of previous years.

2003
Dom’s next single released in early 2003 was the long awaited ‘Dynamo’, with a new tearout inspired from hardcore times of old, called ‘Adrenalin’.

August 2003 saw the release of a collaboration between Dom and Calyx, the first part of this monster workout titled ‘Pneumatix’ had been doing the rounds on dubplate for months and was getting lots of attention so Dom went round to Calyx’s studio to record the B-side ‘See The Light’.

2004
Dom continues to DJ regularly all over the world. The dance floor smash ‘Dance All Night’ was hammered on dubplate for 12 months together with ‘Just So You Know’, it was the last single to be released in May 2004 before his third (and quite possibly best) album CHRONOLOGY which came out in July 2004 to wide critical acclaim. There was also a bonus single featuring a Calyx remix of ‘Dance All Night’ and Dom’s “Freak Seen’ a tune that appeared on the cd version of the album.

Dom has featured heavily in the music press over the last few months including a 5 page studio feature in November’s Future Music magazine. Dom has been touring extensively over the summer in the USA & Europe to promote the album release and continues to tour in Europe, with Australia & New Zealand dates planned for the end of this year.

2005
Dom is now working on his own label ‘Dom and Roland Productions’ the first release ‘Mood Swing’ features Gridlok from the Violence Kru. Photek, Calyx and many other established Drum’n’Bass artists will be involved for subsequent releases. ‘Mood Swing’ should be out early 2005…

I'm not sure if I'll be able to make this.
An unlikely contagious fiend (conjunctivitis) has reared its ugly head and is trying with all its might to limit my weekend activites.
I'll see what I can do but at this current moment, with one eye glued shut, things are not looking to positive.
:\
My apologies to all who long my company.
:)
Speak to y'all soon.
PEACE

Thats strange, i've had a case of red eye for two days now .. hopefully getting better :)

Everyone keeps thinking i'm very very wasted :(

Looking forward to it anyways, hopefully will be there.

Yes Im hoping you will be there too!!

Getting very amped for this =D =D
tomorrow can not come soon enough!!

Alas I have awoken to find my two eyes glued together [no longer just the one] and as such i'm off to the doctor to get more shit to try and fix my pink-eye up.
Any chance of me attending tonight is quickly fading, as is the hope of a strong recovery for tomorrow.
:(
This eats shit...
PEACE

I’m soOOOoOO tempted to go.
And I don’t have any eye condition to use as an excuse...
So gods willing, ill be there:D
