Ecstasy related death in NZ

Hyponatremia and cerebral edema
Excess consumption of water can lead to an abnormal fluid and electrolyte balance. The human body maintains an equilibrium of electrolytes including salt in the bloodstream as part of its normal operation. Sweating during MDMA use and high activity levels cause both electrolytes and water to be lost. Replacing these with water only (in large quantities) can upset the delicate balance, and hyponatremia can result. This can lead to cerebral edema, a swelling of the brain, causing brain damage, paralysis and death. It is very rare for this to occur, dehydration is a more likely side effect of MDMA, especially if dancing. One way to prevent both dehydration and hyponatremia is to drink an electrolyte drink such as Powerade, or fruit juice, rather than water. Be sure to sip drinks frequently, rather than gulping large quantities.
it just comes down to education, when there is a risk of dehydration, there is also a risk of hyponatremia leading to cerebral edema.
