NEWS: $15m Drug Lab Bust - Sydney

Major illegal drug lab uncovered in Sydney
January 7, 2005

New South Wales police say two illicit drug labs used to manufacture $15 million worth of amphetamines have been found on Sydney's north-western outskirts.

Police say more than 500 kilograms of toxic waste and 500 pieces of equipment were discovered in the labs.

Detective Inspector Paul Willingham says it is one of the biggest operations uncovered in the past few years.

"The actual illicit drug manufacturing site that's been located in the lower Portland area of the Hawkesbury River is one of the largest discovered in recent times," he said.

"It's taken us three days for our specialist investigators and forensic chemists to actually safely dismantle this particular site."

No arrests have been made.

So in other words, they spent all this time to bust a building or whatever that used to be a drug lab until the guy; got better equipment\better place\out of the game\arrested on another matter\died.

Yeah, major blow to the drug industry.

Cooks: Cheers boys, thanks for cleaning up the mess we made. :\

What do you reckon the likelyhood of this having and effect on supply is?

about zero :) just like every other bust, maybe afew dealers who only have 1 contact will be dry for a week or two, but thats about it.

but they didnt mention any seized meth? so therefore all the meth produced in the lab is still out there :)

^ was going to say 'where's the meth'?
Good to see them getting rid of 500 kgs of toxic waste, save the cooks dumping it and destroying our beautiful sunburnt country

$15m drug lab uncovered: police

January 08, 2005

POLICE have charged a man after they found a $15 million clandestine drug lab in Sydney's northwest.

The drug laboratory was uncovered at Lower Portland, on the Hawkesbury River, yesterday, police said.

A 32-year-old Lower Portland man was arrested at 7.20pm (AEDT) yesterday on board a vessel at Cabarita Park wharf as part of a police operation called Strike Force Ferramin.

The Drug Squad, Marine Area Command and State Protection Group were involved.

The man was taken to Burwood police station and charged with manufacturing a large, commercial quantity of a prohibited drug.

He was refused bail and will appear in Parramatta Bail Court today.

With no mention of actual meth being recovered, where do they get this magical $15 million figure from? Or am I missing something here? All they seemed to have found was a toxic waste dump.

Maybe with such a local source of meth, property values were skyrocketing and the land the clandestine drub lab is situated on is now worth $15 million? 8)

With a small amount of analysis of the waste and equipment I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult for forensic chemists to work out the route of synthesis and then from the amounts of waste found an estimate of the final yield.
