Bracks U-turn on smoke bans
By ADRIAN ROLLINS
STATE POLITICS REPORTER
Wednesday 7 February 2001
Hotels and Crown Casino may face smoking bans after an about-face by Premier Steve Bracks.
Mr Bracks has reversed his position on smoking in public venues, indicating he will now consider extending bans to hotels and gaming venues.

How legal is a legal drug when the domain in which it is legal to use becomes smaller and smaller? Will cigarettes eventually become legal only outdoors, and in private homes? Up to this point the legislation is being put in place to protect workers from passive smoking, and prevent possible class actions from industry workers. What about smoking being banned outdoors because of the cigarette litter? I wonder how far this line of legislation can go.
What happens when the government tries to protect smokers from themselves?
I've thought for a while now that it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving, and it may not be a long stretch of the imagination to think that cigarette smoking and driving may become an outlawed combination.
Any interest/thoughts?

I cant f**cking stand smoking so I have a very clouded opinion about the issue, but as far as I can see its not doing any good for anyone, including health and litter so why shouldnt it be illegal? It serves no other purpose than to cause people pain and suffering and generally make a disgusting mess so give me one positive from the habit?
I know Wetmuzik 003 was smoke/alcahol free and OMG it was soooooo much better. You could actually breathe on the dance floor and there wasnt that dank cigarette smell on your clothing the next day..... South Australia already has indoor smoking laws and I guarantee it makes a meal/party 100% when you dont have 3000 people puffing away.. but its all a matter of opinion and preferance I guess but I definatley think some sort of legislation should be put in place whether it be fair or harsh.

I cant believe anyone would support such a blatant fascist who is out for the popularity vote.
It makes me very angry when people rail against the government's anti drug stance and then go and support this type of crap!
I am sick to death of the politician's deciding on the state of my health for me. It is disgusting.
Cigarette smoking has become the new scapegoat whenever other issues are too difficult to deal with. A pub or nightclub is a place where people go to chill out and relax and have a drink and usually a cigarette. It is not that big a deal and ostracising them is simply stupid.

Hooray! It is one thing to take drugs yourself, but it is another to force it onto other people.

i am biased. i dont smoke cigarettes, i dont really see what they do for you, you get a headspin the first few times, get addicted to the nicotine and then keep buying them for years. i agree with the move to ban it from public venues, i hate the fact that when i get home after going to certain venues i have to wash my hair asap because it smells like an ashtray. some drugs dont affect other people physically, mdma for example, but the smoke from cigarettes is just foul.
in answer to bts questions, think this. if alcohol was invented today it would be schedule 1 no doubt about it. if GHB was invented centuries ago it would be legal. i wont go into a debate about why GHB is so many times better than alcohol, its just that alcohol is what society has grown up with, the same to a degree with cigarettes. i think soon cigarettes will almost take a backward step to a similar policy of decriminalisation, only personal use in homes and open spaces. lets hope so

hope that made sense, if it didnt tell me and ill re-explain it.

Before I start, I'll let you know, I smoke, but I have an appreciation of how annoying it is, as I don't always feel like a cigga!
There is a solution - smoking and non smoking sections!! That way everyone can enoy the same venue!
On the driving thing, I did read something somewhere about the notion of banning driving and eating!! If they can consider that, why not driving and smoking? It would never work though, I still drive and chat (I even drive and sms sometimes!!! Lucky I drive an Auto!).
I reckon that smoking in food serving places is no good, but in pubs and worst of all outdoor stadiums there should be smoking allowed! What would a pub be with out ciggies?? I'm a bar tender at the momement and I reckon it adds to the atmosphere!
Oh well, I suppose I haven't said anything that hasn't been said before, But ciggies aren't the only drug forced upon people!! I'm often put off by second-hand glowstick!

What really pisses me off is when some moron in front of me flicks his cigarette out the window, right into my radiator... fuckers...
I see no point to cigarettes, so I'm all for banning it from anywhere where people who don't want to smoke will be exposed to it... Unlike other drugs, you aren't the only one smoking if you light up a cigarette... Thankfully it doesn't bother me too much, but some asthmatics suffer because of cigarette smoke, and they shouldn't have to put up with that....

... and victims get beaten, molested, harrassed and abused by some drunk people, and have you ever been the subject of a coke induced aggro fuckwit trying to prove a point? Legal or illegal chemicals aside, arseholes are arseholes.
My point is... according to various studies, smoking can be linked to various diseases and cancers. But, it's legal, and it's a society addiction which drives huge revenue machines. It's legal and it causes diseases so there are laws being introduced to outlaw smoking where it can harm others. Why not criminalise smoking altogether? There's too much money in it.
Will laws illegalising tobacco, and legalising marijuana be passed on the same day? Already we are at the point where you can be fined for smoking inside certain city buildings and public transport, and yet personal cultivation (in some states) and/or possession of small quantities of marijuana may be deemed a non-criminal offence and be issued with a fine.
Plus, it's one of those divided issues. [generalisation]Non-smokers get rabid and say "fuck smokers they just make everything stink and give everyone cancer and i hate them", while the smokers say "fuck the lot of you I'm alright", meanwhile back at the parliament house the government say "smokers rock they give wicked tax $, but non-smokers will crack the shits if we don't do something, so lets regulate the shit out of it and put the taxes up to buggery".[/generalisation]
Don't get me wrong, I don't particularly support one side of the issue, or the other. But I do believe that if someone wishes to exercise their right to enjoy one of the few remaining legal drugs, that "to a certain extent" they shouldn't have to hide inside their own house to do it. Maybe smoking/non-smoking sections in clubs and casinos would be a good idea. I think that option possibly gets the best of both worlds in terms of freedom of choice for everyone.

i asked a friend once why it was ok for him to eat an ice cream cone while driving but not ok to be on the mobile. it seems equally dangerous.

i am a smoker (on the verge of quitting completely).. my opinion is fuck yeah, ban smoking everywhere apart from private residences and outside, because the less chances people have to light up, and the more inconvenient it is, the easier it is to quit.
and to those smokers who get aggressive and say "fuck you ill smoke wherever the FUCK i like and you cant stop me and the government is FUCKED for making these new legislations.."
well, calm down ! obviously youve got a bad nicotine addiction and youre grumpy .. here, have a ciggie - i dont want them anymore. hehe

o yeh, in Singapore, thats just how it is and how it has been.
no smoking in just about anywhere! especially airconditioned places, and all restaurants. no such thing as having a ciggie while waiting for your food.
no smoking in shopping centres, train stations, hell even in queues at the bus station (where its open-air).
the only places i can think of where pple can smoke are pubs and clubs, and open-air neighbourhood coffeeshops. otherwise u just have to step outside. and Singapore's weather is like 1 of these Melbourne summer days, PLUS added humidity. 365 days.
smile.gif
good way to quit id say.
PS. u cant chew gum to help u quit/keep your mouth bz, bcos... THATS BANNED TOO!

I am all for banning smoking in restaurants and places where food is served. And i am a smoker may i add.
WA already has laws against smoking where food is served and it includes open-air places (now i know there are still places that serve food AND allow smoking, that's a gray area apparently according to the license) This extended to clubs and i can vagule remember seeing no-smoking signs at the old excapade.
Burswood casino already has smoking and non-smoking sections. Why is there a rule as having to STAND up whilst smoking tho'??
Your decision to smoke and enjoy yourself is respected BUT not at the expense of others. Asthmatics and others who are sensitive to ciggie smoke are one group of ppl who have to suffer as well as potential suffers of cancer due to passive smoke.
My mother always told me passive smoking kills, so i took up smoking and became an active smoker mommy knows best!!

I too am a smoker, but I think it's disgusting that people can smoke in the Casino esp in the food court, like right in front of the food shops.
At first it was like a novelty for me, now it just makes me sick. What they should do there is have a smoking and non smoking section so that people can still smoke, and others can steer clear from the smoking section. The Casino is quite big so this would work nicely.

I don't smoke, and avoid smokers at all cost, but don't think banning smoking in public places is the answer. I do however think that that if you choose to smoke you should bear the full cost of that decision. I dislike having to pay the same amount of taxes/medicare as a smoker when it is more than likely that they will have a greater impact on the health system (smoking is one of australias largest killers isn't it). Puff away if you want, but not at my expense.

I kinda like it when you're forced to go outside to smoke - it makes it more of an adventure!

But I'm only an occasional smoker so I could see how it would be a pain in the ass for some people.
