Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events

I went into this screening with no expectations of the movie whatsoever. All I knew was that I was surrounded by a bunch of little kids and I was anticipating a piece of crap like when I screened Spongebob.

Boy was I wrong! I loved this movie! It's dark and has a slightly creepy vibe (think Escape from Witch Mountain) because Jim Carrey's character keeps trying to kill the kids. There were some small toddlers in the movie who were getting freaked out. But the story is interesting, the kids all play their parts so well (even the littlest one), and Meryl Streep's character was my favorite! I sat there fascinated through the whole movie.

All in all, it made me want to borrow the books from the library. Very entertaining.

Good to hear! I'm seeing it tomorrow =D

I'll report back to this space.

Edit: Well I'm back! I saw the movie. It was pretty good, visually stunning and very imaginative but the storyline had a glossed over feel. It's obviously leaving holes to be filled in with sequels but it just made me feel a bit cheated for paying at the cinema to see this movie. My advice is to wait for it to come to DVD.

I gave it three stars.

I saw this last night. I really enjoyed it... I thought it might have more adult undertones than it did, but overall, great work.

I liked this movie a lot. The sets/effects were quite beautiful and interesting. I liked how they dont show all the best parts of the film during the previews. I found it to be funny, entertaining and heartwarming. Go see it. :)

^ word about the preview.

*spoilers- if you're hypersensitive*
I was afraid that the scene in the preview where Olaf was in the car about to be hit by the train was going to be the end of it... because that would be very fitting.. but they found a better way IMO. :)

I havent seen it yet. Im already feeling slightly disappointed though, as the previews I have seen already stray from the books a lot. I've read the whole series numerous times over, and was excited when i heard theyd be making a movie, but Im sure it has been changed a fair bit. Still should be good to see though.

from the previews alone... b/c i haven't seen the film, it seems to me that it's a rip-off of Tim Burton's style. Dark/creepy.. but childishly imaginative...

I guess i'll see for myself when i check out the whole film

Average in my opinion. 5 out of 10. Could have been better if they would have actually made it funny.

The 8yr olds with me liked it though. Not too scary and more kid oriented than not.

I really liked it. 'some people do not know woe or sorrow and they go to see films about sunshine and flowers.' I think the characters in this movie are really beautiful and I LOVE meryl streep's house (especially it's undoing).

I had grown tired of the Carrey schtick but decided to give him another chance. I could have done without the same old physical comedy routine of the dinosaur/velociraptor. Same shit different pile Jim. Good story but I would have rather waited for the DVD release.

This is the kind of movie you have to get very baked and see to fully appreciate, it seems like.

this was the most pointless, awful, scatter plotted movie i have ever seen......

^Try to remember it was based on three children's books. You can easily see that from the plot.

Edit: Oh yeah.. Not just 3, there's a whole series. This plot was designed to go on and on and be repetitious, because kids like that. Hell, people like that.

this movie frightened me greatly
my biggest (irrational) fear is of... leetches
now who the fuck got into my head and made a movie plot with the thoughts?

the movie was so odd... but i really enjoyed it
pointless but fun and quirky
im not really a fan of carrey but this was something i liked from him

If you think Jim Carrey is just capable of physical humour, then you obviously haven't seen Eternal Sunshine, The Truman Show, or The Majestic...
