Man fined $3000 for ecstasy in drink
By STEVE BUTCHER
Wednesday 6 September 2000
A technology specialist who spiked the drink of an unsuspecting young woman in a Melbourne bar with half an ecstasy tablet was fined $3000 yesterday for what was described as disgraceful conduct.
A court was told William Tanti, 33, felt sorry for the woman as he believed she was not having fun and felt he was doing her a favor by slipping the tablet into her cocktail.
Melbourne Magistrates Court was told the drugged woman initially became hyped up and flirtatious, but later developed a jaw ache, had difficulty opening her mouth and suffered a racing heart.
Senior Constable Greg Elms, prosecuting, said the woman, who has made a complete recovery, also suffered sleeplessness, forgetfulness and could not work as she felt sick and was shaking.
Tanti, of Power Street, Hawthorn, who pleaded guilty to a charge of introducing a drug into the body of another person, was fined without conviction.
Magistrate Kate Auty told Tanti his actions were an outrageous and appalling breach of trust and "without doubt an absolutely disgraceful piece of conduct".
Senior Constable Elms said the woman was introduced to Tanti at the De Biers bar during an evening function with his work colleagues on July 14 this year.
He said the woman was not drinking as she was the designated driver for her friends, but allowed Tanti to buy her a cocktail into which he put the ecstasy.
Senior Constable Elms said when the group decided to leave, Tanti told her what he had done as he was worried about her driving.
The woman was unhappy and told Tanti that she did not and would not have consented to taking the tablet.
Senior Constable Elms said Tanti made full and frank admissions to police and was remorseful.

I wish someone would feel sorry for me when I have to go to Birthday's at dodgy clubs, and put a pill in my drink

Hmmm. Interesting, too bad we can't get information such as what was in her blood (my bets is amph) after the incedent. Looks to me as another 'slam' on ecstacy due to the possibility that it was a completley different drug. anyone elses opinion?
Hehe, lets not start arguing again about slipping drugs to unsuspecting people

I'm glad he got fuct up tho.
That shyte is not nice. I would even be damn pissed off if someone spiked my drink with my beloved meth. I'm only happy to take a drug I know I'm taking. It'd be kinda scary feeling the onset of a drug with the belief that you haven't ingested any. It'd become clear after a while, if the person was experienced with the drug. But otherwise, fuckman, thatsa no good. And even for an experienced user, it'd be pretty scary until you figured it out.
If suffering impaired reasoning and judgement I hate to think what could go thru a person's mind.

I have to agree with entropope. I'm all for the wilful taking of a substance but to introduce it unknowingly to another person, without consent, is a big no-no. Although the drug we are talking about here is a fave of the board (ok one of friggin' many!) it does not say much for the guy.
...still I like the words used in the article to describe her state.."hyped up and flirtatious, but later developed a jaw ache, had difficulty opening her mouth and suffered a racing heart.." Classic symptoms!
Two thumbs down to the guy! Two BIG thumbs up to xtc!

Having taken Magic Mushrooms without being told - and then tripping and thinking you're losing your mind - it leaves anwful scare in your mind. Whatever the drug - giving someone a drug without their prior knowledge is one of the lowest acts I can think of - maybe it's just me?

No its not just you. I agree. At least E is a 'fairly' nice drug to have added to your drink. But still, its NO excuse. None at all. Period. Dot. .

CA -- sounds like E not amph and you mention arguing again but everyone here seems to agree a v.v. bad thing, as do i. the article seemed fair and balanced and i would not be unhappy had the fine been > a3k.
