Anyone else read through the british survey in februarys 'mixmag'? I found it to be quite interesting. Keep in mind that the stats are not representative of the whole BRITISH population, but from mixmag's readers - and probably those who are into or interested in the clubbing scene would have actually replied. Im not too sure myself whether surveys have a positive or negative impact, so take from it what you will...
-The drugs top 15-
1. Ecstacy(85.6%)

(figures based on number of users in June 1999)
>5% of you have injected any drug.
>70% of you have sold ecstacy - risking a jail sentence.
>10.5% of you have gotten into a fight after taking stimulant drugs.
>40% of you have taken a 6-month break from E then gone back to it.
>81% of women have had sex on E, compared with 72% of men.
>17% of respondents have cut down on E because theyre worries about dying.
>59% of you have driven on drugs.
>4.3% of you have had an accident while driving on drugs.
>40% of you always avoided alcohol while on E.
>Your average age is 23.
>You have on average 2.82 pills in a session but worry about how safe E is.
>Your favorite drug is ecstacy. You think its good value for money, and not addictive.
Hmmm... Ive probably broken some copyright laws, but i figure its good publicity! (as theres lot more cool stuff in the survey)

mixmag have always had the only honest coverage of the english e scene...
now can someone tell me what flatliners are? seen the name around a couple of times but dont really know..... anyone?

.... he who makes a beast of himself, rids himself of the pain of being a man...

Not sure what the UK media vs drugs scene is like compared to ours (and we all know what ours is like...) - but there seems to be a lot more liberal stuff going on, ie: this article in mixmag, and also one on the Ministry Of Sound web ( www.ministryofsound.com/features/drugs/ ) - check out the "send free drugs" option!
Oh, I also found a ref. to flatliners ( http://announce.queer.org.au/199906/msg00076.html )
cheers,
hux.
And before anyone points it out, yes I know it's a gay site

- they're the biggest party animals around!!!

Flatliners were around in ~98. Not appealing whatsoever. Can't remember the full chemical name though (maybe paraMD...?)but I know some people who've had them and absolutetly hated them. Named for the ECG "flatline" showing no heartbeart, they have been resposible for several deaths and heart attacks (I think, don't have proof of this, just what I remember). Anyway the effects were severe head rushing, anxiety, pounding heart and no ecstacy empathy effects at all. 1 pills was more than enough. Haven't heard much more about them lately so I can only hope they've disappeared. Very dangerous to get if you think your taking E.

Here's a couple of quick references to this chemical, otherwise known as 4 - methylthioamphetamine:
The first is a general misc drugs info page at Urban75, discussing risks of mixing 4MTA with other drugs etc. http://www.urban75.com/Drugs/drugmisc.html
Another useful page I found was a toxicology department publications list:
Elliott, S.P., "Fatal poisoning with a new phenylethylamine: 4-methylthioamphetamine (4-MTA).", J.Anal.Tox. 1999 (in press).
There has been much publicity in the U.K. regarding a new phenylethylamine based compound called 4-methylthioamphetamine (4-MTA), also known as para-methylthioamphetamine (p-MTA), MTA or "Flatliner". Chemically, 4-MTA is an amphetamine derivative and is a non-neurotoxic potent serotonin-releasing agent and reversible inhibitor of rat monoamine oxidase-A.
However, possibly the best page on this substance that I found with a quick search was from the London Toxicology Group from June last year.

PLUR - happy knowledge searching,
