FILM: Mystic River

I watched this movie just yesterday...I rented off of NetFlix and waited a while until I watched it, it was actually really good, I don't think I've ever seen a movie like that before...it has Tim Robbins(Dave), Sean Penn(Jimmy), Kevin Bacon(Sean), and Laura Linney(Sean's wife), it's definitely a must-see, I would reccomend that you watch it..

weird. i only just saw this yesterday also and i meant to start a thread. then i got distracted...

i was really disappointed with this movie. i felt the script was lazy and predictable. i felt the performances were mostly phoned in and i felt the direction was commonplace.

did sean and tim deserve their oscars? sean sure and tim maybe.

but bill murray deserved his more :)

I have it right now and am probably watching it tonight. My mom said it was sort of disturbing..that some of the characters were "gross"...

They're not gross...the movie overall is good...maybe the acting is a little shaky, but I still liked it..

This movie uses emotional logic really well. I enjoyed being bummed by this.

^^^ good call.

yeah, i really enjoyed this film a lot too. it came out at the same time as 21 grams, and i think it was certainly the better of the two. perhaps 21... had a little more style to it, but this beat it, imo, in substance.

some really awesome performances also. alasdair, which performances didn't you enjoy? (i only ask because i felt that the mains were unquestionably good - 'specially penn and robbins - and the supporting cast pretty consistent too :)).

i thought tim robbins performance was not his best work by a long shot. i generally like marcia gay harden and she disappointed. really, the only actor i enjoyed was sean penn and, even there, i felt that he was just doing sean penn again...

my disappointment may be as much a function of my expectations as the actual performances. perhaps i'll eatch it again.

^^^ i think i can see where you're coming from, at the least; penn *was* just his usual self (which i still love, but it wasn't a hugely challenging role for him), and whilst i thought robbins was fantastic, he wasn't really playing against type either. i definitely disagree on harden though, i thought she was great :)

hmm. now i'm not even sure if i really want to rent this!

Why would it get so much recognition if it wasn't that great?

^^

rent it and find out. I found it to be an amazing film. Fantastic performances from all the leads especially Sean Penn and Tim Robbins. I found it to be quite powerful personally, and I definitely recommend it to anyone :)

it's on my netflix list.

I am watching it regardless. I was just surprised to see such a negative reaction from so many people on here!! :)

I am looking forward to it :)

I liked this movie a lot. I actually play baseball every week right on the Mystic River and you can see one of my friend's old house in one of the fly over seens. I pointed to the screen and said I puked in that street haha

Weird how opinions can differ so. I thought this was by far the best I have ever seen Tim Robbins. He seemed so different from a lot of the other characters I had seen him play. There were times during the movie I had to sort of remind myself it was even him because he seemed like someone else. *maybe it's just me*

Sean Penn was amazing as usual. He is one of my favorite actors anyway.
He did a great job and definately deserved his oscar, IMO.

The movie just really draws you in..I was enthralled from start to finish. Definately powerful. I watched it 4 times, 4 days in a row.

<3 this movie. :)

I thought it was worth it just for Sean Penn's performance. Generally speaking, all the actors turned in some fine work I think.

If anything watch it because Sean Penn is HOT. :D

I didn't think it was amazing, and it started off a bit slow and confusing....but I enjoyed it overall, especially the twist at the end. I actually don't think I've ever seen Sean Penn in anything else and I thought he was great. It's definitely NOT a cheerful movie however. :\

21 Grams beat this movie by a long shot. Better acting, better script, better everything. The plot in Mystic River was so unbelievably predictable, the "twist" at the end is really a joke; if you just do a little logical analysis of the plot you will see it's pretty obvious who the killer is. Robbins was great, and I consider him the saving grace of this movie.

While it was certainly a good movie, and Sean Penn played his character well, I just don't understand how he won an Oscar for this performance and not for his work in 21 Grams, which was a much more profound and thought-provoking movie, not to mention his character in 21 Grams was so much more complex.

Watched this and 21 Grams around the same time when they came out on pay-per-view, and was really pretty disappointed in both of them. They were really hyped for independant films and then winning the oscars made me want to see them even more. I actually fell asleep the first time through 21 grams.
