Drug sniffers

MX: 5 March 2004
by Evonne Barry

Police sniffer dogs will patrol nightclub queues in a bid to prevent clubbers smuggling drugs inside.

Prahran police have requested special dogs to head the campaign.

The pilot program, due to begin in four to six weeks, is part of a broader campaign to combat drug use in the Chapel St area.

Police have been meeting nightclub owners in recent weeks to discuss the drug crackdown.

While it is believed drug-detecting dogs would not be taken inside venues, they would patrol queues outside, as well as Prahran's back streets and car parks.

Police would not identify the clubs or say how many dogs would be used.

"We don't want to tell offenders (that information)," spokesman Kevin Loomes said.

"There's a group of dogs being trained at the moment for various purposes.

"And there has been a request for the use of dogs to assist in detecting drug offenders in the streets."

Industry figures welcome the idea, with nightclub king Brian Goldsmith today applauding any measures taken to curb drug-taking and dealing.

"And idea which frightens people out of taking drugs into clubs is a brilliant idea", Goldsmith, who pioneered the city's nightclub scene by opening Underground three decades ago, said.

"And it wouldn't be a bad idea if clubs had their own sniffer dogs to stand at the door."

But Prahran's commercial traders' association, Streets Ahead, condemned the idea.

"It's not a war zone, it's a tourist area famous for fun, fashion and fine dining", president Jim Pothitos said.

"We want more police presence, not dogs. Sniffer dogs will intimidate those who are innocent of crime."

One nightclub worker back the plan, provided dogs stayed outside.

"Next they will be checking people's wallets and strip-searching them," she said.

I guess all that gloating us Victorians were doing at our northern neighbours has finally attracted some serious attention.

What does this say about the direction Victoria Police plan to take in regards to drugs? Is this the first step down the path to Sydney-style club raids and sniffer dogs at big parties?

:(

Shit -- I actually had a dream about this the other night ;( NOOO...

It was only a matter of time.... let's just hope it stay a MINOR venture by the cops and stays in Prahan.

*goes off and weeps in the corner*

yeah right...maybe for the 1st couple of times...what about whats been happening in sydney? are the laws different...or are your police just nicer (slower). Maybe they think they don't need to go inside, coz they'll bust everyone b4 they get in.
"Next they will be checking people's wallets and strip-searching them," she said.
They are already doing this at the last several events i've been to in Sydney.

I hope you melbournites don't suffer the same fate that your northern cousins are currently experiencing.

All this will do is scare people into taking an unsafe amount of drugs (entire nights worth) before lining up...may aswell have some ambulance officers onsite with the police to deal with the potential for casualties.

If my favourite clubs had sniffer dogs screening people in the line for the entire night...I'll probably just choose seedier venues that don't have this bullshit involved.

At a recent sydney raid (disguised as a club night), I went in without drugs and the dogs still ruined my night (although they were inside). I had my wallet searched...twice.

The key is to manufacture new club drugs faster than the police can recognise these and train an army of dogs accordingly...remain one step ahead ;)

I think the most realistically attainable key might be to dose before you go, catch a cab, and return home if you need a top up. Of course by the time you divert the extra money for cabs from your nightly budget, you won't be able to afford as many treats, and so effectively Harm Reduction will be achieved.

If only it worked like that 8)

More probable is that it will splinter the crowds, meaning the "problem" is dispersed rather than being concentrated in larger clubs and being "right under your nose" It does little to curb use or minimise risks. Club management and staff should be well acquainted with intervening in drug related incidents, be those health or law related. In a sense, 5 or more years in dealing (properly) with E related casualties, makes such an environment inherently safer then it used to be, and a great deal more than an underground carpark in a disused building, or even smaller bars and clubs where people G'ing out may not be common or even understood and therefore dealt with inappropriately.

Besides the police determination to minimise drug use in large clubs, there are many other indicators that the "movement" is going more underground. POAIVL's recent thread on clubbing and the impact of commercialisation outlines this. People are becoming jaded in their masses. The traditional rave has become a fancy club gig, and something is stirring within the artful side of things. I think the cycle is at that time. What will be next wave and where will you go to catch it before it's swept into the ever changing and short lived fashion that is mainstream music?

An interesting difference of this next wave when compared to the advent of underground dance events, is that the following will be huge from the start. Events will be kept secret to avoid overcrowding, as the privalige that goes with being one of a 'select few' at a magic event will once again become the inspiration and drive. Rebirth is a human condition :)

im expecting oneof the first places these dogs will be is outside one of Chapel St's most notorious clubs...

where will we all go for our sunday recoveries...

*starts looking for a new weekend home*

In my mind there's at least two clubs in the area that are notorious for the Sunday morning/day crowd they draw, with at least four more running big clubs nights on weekends that draw crowds.

I think it's fair to say that the clubs in this area fall into three categories based on the music they play and the crowd they draw on weekends;

House - The two down near the corner of High Street and the one near the corner of Toorak Road.

Hard trance/NRG - The one near the corner of Commercial Road and the one further up Commercial.

Gay clubs - near the rail bridge on Commercial Road.

The question is who are the sniffer dogs here to target... I would venture a serious guess that it's aimed at the hard house clubs, simply by the type of crowd they draw and their proximity to a car park that is notorious for drug dealing/taking.

I've often thought that as many pills are consumed in the suburb of Prahran than in the rest of the Melbourne metropolitan area combined in a single weekend.

Victorian Police are too scared to "RAID" another Melbourne nightclub - they are still recovering from the TASTY fiasco, so they will keep all attempts outside the clubs.

I think that in sydney, thats where the focus is also. But there is a prominent gay club up on flinders, that is infamouus for raids also.

Thats pretty fucked up - I'm sure it will happen in Sydney too.

Oxford Street & Darling Harbour !

Daaaang!

shal :D

You hit the nail on the head Daimo, I posted this about two weeks ago in a different thread: -

I understand that police command in victoria are still reasonably nervous about raiding a club or event because of the Tasty nightclub episode a few years ago.

Dogs outside would be a far safer bet for the police. However if you were a handler and your dog stuck his nose in the door of a club, got a wiff of the noxious fumes emanating from said establishment and went beserk, I'm tipping that in the heat of the moment the constable would go along for the ride.

Anyone here have any practical experience at this point of the effects of this - ie: visited the popular Chapel St venues and seen these dogs?

I guess I'm a few hours early at this point, but tomorrow morning I'd be interested to know whether this announcement has come to fruition yet.

I have a lot of friends in the Melbourne gay scene and the Tasty incident, for many of whom happened way before their time, remains some sort of golden middle-finger from the scene to the police.

Due to the nature of the raids, with patrons of the club being strip searched and publicly humiliated, those same patrons were able to mount legal action which resulted in a compensation payout from Victoria Police.

I've heard people in gay clubs refer to the Tasty incident as why police don't try to raid Melbourne clubs these days, especially gay ones. The truth is, it's not that unlikely that club raids can happen again in Melbourne, if they stayed on the right side of the law, there's no reason why they can't be regular events in the Melbourne club scene just like in Sydney.

No one, no club and no particular scene is untouchable. We'd like to think so, but that's just not how things work, plus with the whole Two Tribes fiasco recently, I'd dare say that nothing is off the table.

That said, while I wasn't out this weekend (which is obvious by the date/time of this post), I would appreciate it if anyone who did see any sniffer dog action in the Prahran area report back.

I dont have a problem with the over policed clubs and events in Sydney. What I do find however, cops in event/club without the dogs have a hugely differant attitude than when the dogs show up. I know Im not the only one to notice the attitude swing.

no dogs at the event/club - the cops are friendly and part of the crowd apart from their uniforms just as long as they dont catch you with something you shouldnt.

dogs there at the club/event - the cops attitude is like they'd rather set the dog on you.

you get use to seeing them out. Just dont carry so much gear on you (we heard a girl in the line at a big sydney event trying to tell the cops the massive bag of pills was for her mates and personal use and that big ward of cash was for people she owed - nice try) and leave - as hard as it might be for alot of people those distinctive smells at home. Its plain common sense.

I can see what will happen.

Because people wont be able to re-dose in the club, people will take twice as much before entering. ie; because you can't have one dose at 10pm, then another at 1am, people may choose to have two doses together at 10pm, thinking this will prolong their high on the drug. Ultimately this will increase the risk of overdosing and negative effects.
