whats the difference between a rave and a doof? so far all i have gathered is rave is inside doof is outside. :\

you got it in one - also a doof's music is focused towards psy and goa trance. (there are exceptions to this rule)

the difference betwen a doof and a rave is VERY different in my opinion.

the whole vibe and reason for people being there differs greatly

Raves are very commericial and superficial and tend to play mainly happyhard and the main focus is getting fucked up on pills and being "plurry"

Doofs play psytrance and are full of like minded people who want to also get "fucked up" i guess, main choice of narcotics being hallicinigen drugs such as lsd , dmt etc

To me doofs are more full of people who love the world and are very pasinate about the music and the people in the "scene" then people at raves

doofs are very community and family orientated aswell i feel

of course i am generalising and being 'DOOFqueen" i'm a little biased of raves and doofs and really can go on and on about this subject forever but i won't ;) hehehe

instead i will give you a doof link that you can read through and if you still have any questions please let me know, i'd be happy to take you doofing anytime aswell =D

I find that to be a bit of a genralisation. yes there are ppl who go to raves just to get fucked up but there is also alot of ppl who go to raves to apreciate the music and get into the scene for other reasons.

In terms of the music played at raves i have only gone to a couple that play happyhardcore and they were underage raves full of kandi ravers. At overage raves there is a broarder range of music being played such as drum and bass, trance and breaks. the people take all sorts of drugz e, meth and on occasion acid (here in perth its a bitch to find).

I agree that raves have become more commercialized but i belive that the essence behind raving still exists. You just need find some decent underground raves.

Ive only goen to one doof but i agree with what doofqueen has said on those. they seem to play mostly psytrance and the ppl are tripping however i did see alot of ppl plurring off their tits on e. =D

well like i said i am biased and it was just my opinion and not fact :p

red arrow...you kinda twisted my words around there buddy :\

A Family Orientated gather of people who want to get fucked up on acid?

Believe it or not that's not far from it. I'm not saying the kids all take drugs (heaven forbid!), but in terms of a camping holiday or weekend away, it is quite common throughout Australia for the family to pack up and head to the bush for a doof.

Some doofs are a true melting pot. I've even seen conservative Country Womens Association members asking DJ's for a copy of their set!

The fact is that Doof and bush-dance-party culture has generally been well received in many parts of conservative Rural Australia. It often brings a welcomed injection of funds into communities which may have been severely affected by drought or simply by isolation.

For these towns' people, the visitors are generally well mannered and behaved, even if some do have funny haircuts ;) For many of the older generations of farmers in Australia, not since the barn dances of the 50's have young people been seen to enjoy themselves so much. You just have to look in their eyes - they feel it too!

Doofs are generally very positive events. These days with the increasing amounts of legislation designed at limiting raves in urban areas, the future for bush doofs in Oz still looks very bright.

Great thread by the way

This thread is bound to cause heated debate when a particular scene gets knocked ;)

The crowd that attends each event will be perceived differently depending on the individual. While the doof scene can be more accurately described, the "rave" scene is way too diverse, and encompses many sub-genre's, even within one event.

I think its safe to say that difference between the two is that doof's are predominately located in the bush/outdoor with a focus on psy and goa trance - the description of atmosphere and crowd is open to individual interpretation.

I think each type of event has its place under the sun. They are obviously for very different people but there is a fair amount of cut accross between them also.

I enjoy both, and i'm not afraid to admit that. Doofs are often very far away and in themiddle of no where. If you want to leave, then you have to drive for hours to get home, and if you don't have a car then you are at someone else's mercy for the entire event.

Raves are closer to the city, often held in a place like the sydney superdome or somewhere similar. The music tends to be bigger name djs, who often (though not always) play much more mainstream styled music. (There is nothing wrong with this if this is what you like.)

They have totally different vibes, that is for sure. I think it takes more effort to go to a doof, and as a general rule they tend to be put on by a group of individuals, as opposed to an events corporation.

So "Doof" is a Aussie slang? started in Australia or also exisits other countries in under "different name/culture"?

i think it needs to be stated that a 'rave' should be underground and held in a warehouse. In which case; the above definitions of 'mainstream' and superficial' don't hold. IMHO If it's held in some huge arena, i don't think that they should called a 'rave'. *sHrUGS*. Just my opinion..

Underground Resistance. unexploitable

Oh, word to that brother.

Before I go on, I should probably state that I'm in the raver camp, though I go to doofs and quite like them. Psy rocks. Doofer hippies are cool.

But I have to disagree strongly with the idea that raves are big commercial events. I even tend to disagree with the idea that the big commercial events are raves at all. I know, I go to both kinds of party. I even have fun at the Big Commercial Thingies.

But a rave, a real rave, is an increasingly rare thing nowadays, and when you find one, you know it. It's hard to run an underground event in a warehouse, and even if you pull that off, attaining that critical mass of like-minded, like-mooded, hot-dancing, PLUR*-vibrating fools is never guaranteed. When you do, you feel like you've picked up the torch for a little while, and you want to do it again.

And ya know something? I've never heard Happy Hardcore at one.

*Note on PLUR: I mean just that. Peace. Love. Unity (Understanding). Respect. I don't mean running around with a dummy in your mouth trying to out-gurn the other people you're having the hardass pill-munching competition with and demanding that people Smile, Dammit!

^^^ true that. btw, doofqueen is from nsw, and we're from melbourne. i think they get a helluva lot more happy hard up there than we do. in fact, i've never heard it out, either. though i like it :)

i have heard that actually, that is no happyhard in melbourne, thats strange because all the raves here are based on it

urbanhog...i'm not actually sure if "doof' is just aussie slang or not, it might actually be teh way they are referred to everyelse but i really have no idea

i cant wait to doof around the world though =D

i think the main difference to me is the vibe...raves are very youthful, buzzing and electric kind of energy while doofs have a peaceful, freeing , harmonious yet still energetic (but in a different way) feel to them. It's really hard to desribe a vibe though. You really have to go to both and feel it yourself. You will feel it instantly :)

I first heard of the term *doof* in Byron Bay in 1995. I wouldn't like to say it originated there, but it was some time till I met anyone outside of Byron who'd heard of the term.

Doofing is a lot more tribal- the first doof people go to they'll wonder why everyone is dancing so funny, but after a while you understand it's just about letting go and not caring. At raves i used to do spins and jumps and shuffles, but to be honest it's no where near as fun as just dancing like a fool with a bunch of smiling hippies :D

peace

exactly! =D thats what i forgot to mention in my desription...tribal, primal and raw, the animal in you comes out and you go back to primitive kinda feel (which anyone who is prissy about getting dirty just doesnt understand) I feel like a cavewoman when i'm dancing to psy at a doof, there just isnt a more freeing feeling in the world really :)

foosh, doosh, doof and oonce.
all round the world.

isnt Earthcore just a large doof?
compare it to your moral high ground about the non-commercialism of doofs! and now youll see when you compare big dance-parties to raves your left with the same feeling.
make sure youre talking apples and apples, and when youre learned enough... you may reclaim your name.
