Four arrested over drug import

FOUR men have been arrested for importing 2.4 kilograms of pseudoephedrine from Fiji, allegedly for use in the production of amphetamines.
The Australian Federal Police tracked the delivery of the chemical after customs screening found it concealed in scuba diving tanks at an international freight depot in Sydney.
The parcel was delivered to Brisbane and police mounted a surveillance campaign and allegedly witnessed a man taking delivery of it.
Five search warrants were then executed and four men were arrested in the Brisbane suburbs of Albany Creek, Auchenflower and Middle Park.
During the searches materials and chemicals believed to be used in amphetamine production were seized.
The arrests were the culmination of a 13-month joint operation by the Australian Federal Police (AFP), Queensland Police, Australian Customs and authorities in Fiji and Vanuatu.
Three search warrants have also been executed in Fiji and two Fijian residents are assisting the AFP with its inquiries.
Earlier this week, police had discussed the dangers of South Pacific nations being used as staging points for amphetamine production at the South Pacific Chiefs of Police conference held in Brisbane.
The four men appeared in court today charged with importing prohibited goods under the Customs Act.
One of the men has also been charged with possessing items used in the production of drugs.
