Potentially dangerous 1,4-butanediol ["G"] - Melbourne mid-Oct 2003

I have received information by Private Message that a 'dealer' in Melbourne who specialised in dealing 1,4-butanediol (sometimes sold under the name "G" because it mimics the effects of GHB) attempted to dilute an unknown quantity of his liquid product with methylated spirits last week. On consuming this product himself at a nightclub in Melbourne on Friday 11th October 2003, he apparently suffered a medical emergency (of unknown description, presumably due to the synergy of {almost pure alcohol} and 1,4-butanediol) leading to his collapse. Subsequently he was revived (I assume by ambulance personnel).

At present it is unclear (to people who know him that sent me the information) how much of the contaminated 1,4-butanediol was on his person that night, whether he distributed any/all of it prior to his collapse, or if someone removed it from him before he was attended to by medical personnel. I am not aware of any other reports of people collapsing from contaminated 1,4-butanediol this weekend.

From the information I have received, I cannot determine why he collapsed; whether it was from any kind of poisoning, or from an overdose of 1,4-butanediol, or from any combination of drugs and alcohols. Since there is a high probability that his collapse was directly related to ingesting an unknown quantity of this contaminated 1,4-butanediol, I have agreed to issue this announcement in case anyone reading this message purchased 1,4-butanediol that could be adulterated with methylated spirits in Melbourne last week.

Most methylated spirits in Australia doesn't contain much methanol at all (~2%max). It is unlikely to be a component in the synergy BT described, however methylated spirits for all intents and purposes is almost pure ethylalcohol (ethanol) with a splash of pyridine and colour. A small amount would equate to a much higher equivalent in liquor as it is essentially undiluted.
