I was thinking about this the other day - when I have a problem with something particular I always call a specific friend because I know them as "the electonics expert", "the computer geek", "the handyman" etc etc. It got me to thinking that we all have specific talents that we might be known for, and if not talents then our knowledge base for a particular subject.

For me it seems to be three things.

My knowledge of automotive, specifically Commodores - its my hobby and has been since I was 14 when I stripped down my first lawn mower. I'm always getting friends ringing me up asking about problems with their cars. I like to think I have a good knowledge base.

Anime and manga - another hobby of mine that kind of borders on obesession ;) I put alot of research into the area because the art form holds a real interest for me.

I'm also known to alot fo my friends as the groups social worker due to the amount of time that I can invest in people when they need help - I guess this stems from my formal training as youth worker. I've not been in the field for awhile now but its seems to have carried on :)

So whats your shinning area of expertise and/or knowledge - and expertise doesn't have to be any professionaly acquired skill.

my friends always come to me for advice, be it about love and relationships, friendships, life decisions, whatever.
i'm not sure why they do this as i have no expertise in these fields and seem to fuck my own life pretty good, but it's always been this way. even if they go to another friend first, they always seem to come to me for advice too.

when i was in year 12 a friend told me i was like 'the unofficial year 12 complaints box- if anyone has a problem they come to you to get it fixed', this was because i was all fuck they system and my dad's a principal so i knew all the little in's and out's of school rules.

so yeah, i guess that's my area, but it's not really due to expertise, nor was it chosen, not that i'm complaining, i love helping my friends out:D

I am a natural flirt with a slightly wicked sense of humour...;)
When I was born I started flirting with the doctor...It gets me into trouble sometimes well a lot of the time:\

I'm always the one people (especially my FAMILY, eugh) come to with their computer problems. I hate it, because I don't actually know that much about computers, I just know stuff about the intarweb and designing stuff. I don't know why your printer isn't working, dammit.

I can out-code just about anyone I know.

The fact that I do it professionally is a nice coincidence; I regard myself as like a professional footballer or something - getting paid what some would see as far too much, to do what I'd be doing if I was on the dole anyway.

That's pretty specific geekery - my friends generally know better than to ask me for help with their broken computer or whatever, since I'm probably only slightly less useless than they are :)

So people come to me for advice on their little programming projects... it's surprising who has them sometimes!

Err... other than that, no. I occasionally also get asked to teach people how to dance (as recently as this weekend, by a guy I've known for years), I guess.

I always get asked about medical and health issues, as i am a nurse and very knowledgable bout when to call 000 and when to see the doctor. I am also very handy at natural remedies that say poor souls from eating expensive and useless antibiotics.

I am also known as being a very good judge of character. if i dont get a good vibe bout someone straight away you can bet your right ball that person isnt worth knowing. Related to this is the ability to read between the lines and get the feel of someones actions and motivations. Both these skills are good separately, but great combined.

ps. god im good hey ;) 8)

People tend to ask me things about spelling, grammar and thesaurus-type stuff at work. Like: "what's another word for...?" Geez, just 'cause I have a journalism degree.... 8( ;)

Online - I'll give you one guess what my topic of expertise is. (hint: it's above my avatar)

Friends don't ask me much at all. Boooo. I must be under-talented in any other area. So there you go.... Sex and grammar. Whoo hoo.

Its not what i gloat about, but my mates see me as the Bong Man. Anytime anyone needs a good airtight billy, they ask me to make it. Makes me feel useful tho ;)

My friends supposed area of expertise is medicine and health. He's a Doctor and is always dispensing medical advice to people. "Hey trust me, I'm a Doctor".

Nevermind he gained his Doctorate through a PhD in Computer Network Engineering! 8(

I’d like to think I am an expert in lame calls, more specifically the creation and execution of said skill. *I’d like to think* people go to me when they want to take out their frustrations by experiencing my lameness for making an unnecessary call when they are least susceptible to laugh thereby giving them reason to abuse me and relieve some of the stress in their lives ;)

Well, not really, I make lame calls anyway, I wouldn’t care if my mate was hanging off the end of a cliff and the pointy-part that he was attached to was crumbling, if a lame call was due I would make one ;) Then I would save my friend…

I always get question relating to where i can get people drugs (especially acid) , sex questions, stuff about doofs and also fairies and wings

i don't really know if this is just weird or plain bad :p

My area seems to be mainly horoscopes, numerology, divination [ie: Tarot, Runes, etc.] and all thing's kinda-mystic-and-witchy.....
Advise I dispense non-stop, even when it's not necessarilly asked for. ;)

Also, anything to do with grammar and spelling....also creative writing [poetry, stories..speeeeech writing, what to write on cards! Hehe].

Also any girly type stuff, like colour-combos such.
Most of my friends are guys. :)

film.

generally if any of my friends wants to know anything about a movie (or borrow one :p), they'll come ask me (well, as long as they don't mind my ranting and raving ;)). since taking my first cinema class in my first year of uni, i've developed quite the passion, and have been pretty much watching films non-stop since then. i guess i'm kinda like a mini-imdb :)

music.

i've always loved music, and generally try to take in as much -of as many different styles- as is humanly possible. so, this, coupled with my pretty massive cd and mp3 collection (plus a slowly growing assortment of vinyl) and a fairly obsessive kinda mind for things means that i've got quite a big knowledge base of contemporary music (apart from pop, anyway).

plus, i think i've got pretty good taste :)

oh yeah, i guess i'm a bit of drug geek to most of my friends too (but that comes with the whole bluelight territory i guess, and i'm always happy to dish out a bit of advice, if it'll help).

I am unnervingly good at retaining trivia. That is any piece of information that is distinctly lacking in practical use. I run 2 trivia nights and write questions for various others.

My abilities at trivial information regurgitation reach their mind-numbing climax in the area of art and art history, a subject that I would be quite prepaired to bring up in any 'worlds most boring man' competition you care to name.

;) =D

well my friends normally come to me when they need some form of moral problem fixed or when they need emotional support. (i seem to be good at giving it...but not asking for it) :\ ive been told i should take up being a 'shrink' but its not really my thing. *shrugs*

a lot of people i know also come to me asking stuff bout sex and things to do with sex ;) i guess thats one of my strong points aswell...hehe ;)

im good at listening and giving up my time for others.

i am to good at taking on other peoples responisbilites to make their lives not as stressfull no matter what the cost to me is.

Yeah my friends roll their eyes every time i be a drug geek and repeat something I read at Bluelight or on Erowid. So if they've got a drug question, I'm their man. They expect me to have tested and tried every fucken pill in the country aswell...they're always like "Diego will know if the Green Squares from the Northern Territory are good" 8) Hahaha my friends call it 'tripstasy' too - I love that one =D

Maybe Financial/Economic advice? But who the hell needs that! Hmm..I guess gangsta rap music is one of my definite forte's..but no Aussies give enough of a fuck to bother asking me anything about it. Maybe sporting advice ??? like skateboarding and snowboarding...but not even..GrRrRrRr I suck! No one needs my expertise with anything :X

I think im an all-rounder...in other words; I know nothing about everything =D

No wait!! I've got it!!
Apparently I must be an expert at knowing what other people are doing at any given moment! 'Coz my friends are ALWAYS ringing me up to say;
friend: "hey man, what are we doing tonight?"
me: "how am i supposed to know fool! I'm only one person!"
friend: "Whats Joe doing today?"
me: "shut up" 8(

Random trivia is my field as well 8( I have a habit of retaining useless crap in my head and regurgitating it at trivia nights :)

Other than that I was once asked to give someone lessons on how to tweak people out and break their brains. Used to be somewhat of a talent of mine :)

People don't really come to me for sex advice as such, just to check whether or not something is too fucked up or not as I kinda had an interesting 'education' ;)=D

CB ;)
