How do psychedelics affect the brain?

Why do they cause hallucinations and reduce symptoms of mental illness?

The Powers Lab at Yale University is recruiting people who have used psychedelics for a fully online study that measures how psychedelics affect basic perception and learning using brief games and questionnaires!

WHAT THE STUDY INVOLVES:

  • ~2 hours (though you can take breaks) of time at your computer
  • Signing a consent form and completing an eligibility survey
  • 2 Questionnaires about psychedelic and other drug use, mental health, how you think, and any unusual sensory experiences you’ve had.
  • 4 online games (10-25 minutes each)
  • A few debriefing and quality-control questions.
WHAT YOU GET FOR PARTICIPATION:

  • $60 via VISA gift card (delivered) or Amazon gift card (emailed) or Prolific account (direct)
  • The ability to participate in another study where you can get an additional $240 — for people who are already planning on using a psychedelic in the future
  • Helping the medical and scientific community understand the therapeutic and side effects of psychedelics!
WHAT IS NEEDED TO PARTICIPATE:

  1. A Computer (not smartphone or tablet)
  2. Stable internet
  3. Good headphones
  4. A private, distraction-free space
  5. Some history of psychedelic use
  6. No same-day psychoactive drug-use (besides nicotine or caffeine)
HOW TO START:

Open the link below to the REDCap survey — you’ll start on the consent and automatically move through the screening survey, questionnaires, and games. https://redcap.research.yale.edu/surveys/?s=7AHLLM8MTY9JXW38

FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT US AND THE STUDY:
  • Questions and concerns are welcomed by post comments and/or emails to [email protected] or messages to YalePsychedelicStudy
  • Personal identifying information is not needed — while an email or shipping address is needed for VISA or Amazon gift card, these do not need to be your actual addresses (and we include a guide for how to set up automatic email forwarding). Those with a Prolific Account may complete the study via Prolific to avoid sharing any information at all.

@Tronica sorry to bother you, has this study been approved on BL? In other words, is this a legit study that adheres to BL's rules re drug studies?

Hi, @BK38! I'm not sure if you meant to @ me in this comment (instead of Tronica), but if so no bother at all — I've cleared this study with Dr. Monica Barratt :)
Looking at this research standards page we should meet all requirements. The study does not currently enumerate the specific inventories that questions draw upon (though it does cover the nature of questions asked), but I would be happy to list those at the start if you think participants would want to know :)

If you (or another BL administrator) would like to try the study themselves, please let me know! I can make sure you get past the screening at the beginning (and keep your data separate from the others if you want to provide random answers). Email [email protected] or comment an email you can receive a link at in the comments :)

To whom it may concern,

I began the study, but I am unfortunately not eligible for some reason (I suspect because I am on medication for C-PTSD - diazepam specifically and occasionally use CBD/Cannabis products). Perhaps that muddies the waters too much with respect to the results re psychedelics on mental health. I'm a fervent believer in psychedelic medicine so there was no way I'd ever want to act in bad faith and game the system.

Also, I might politely point out that the wording on one of the questions in the consent form is rather unclear with respect to "benefit." There is no choice to answer that one would "benefit" monetarily. I certainly don't have the education level of someone who attends Yale, but I do have a verified IQ of 147 from a doctor (to quote Steven Hawking "people who boast about their IQ are losers"), but maybe that's the Dunning-Kruger effect in action and in actuality, I'm just a dunce. To me it almost felt like one would have to be an expert in cryptography to decipher the patterns in your study (the very first test - completing images). But perhaps that's the point.

If you're bored and fancy reading something from an advocate of psychedelic medicine, you might like to take a look at a paper I wrote for fun (or laugh at my ineptitude):

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GAgoFrUMmO-D6nn31Z4K-oLcNVZJz8h-CoxjeJkM1nc/edit?usp=sharing

In any case, I do appreciate Yale's work and that of other organizations like MAPS. I hope some valuable data can be gleaned from this study.

Best of luck,

BK38

P.S. I did intend to ask Dr. Barratt (Tronica). It's just that this study popped up and you have "Greenlighter" status. With monetary compensation involved, I just wanted to confirm that this was not a scam of some sort or a bad actor collating personal information.

Thank you so much for your interest in participating, BK38! And for your scientific integrity in not changing answers to try to make yourself eligibile -- sorry to not have your data! Hopefully you saw, but we do allow folks to give us their email so that they can be contacted 1) if our eligibility criteria changes (right now it's somewhat narrow for the sake of scientific validity), and 2) if we have any more studies in the future!

That's a good point re: benefit. I'll update the consent quiz accordingly :)

You're definitely not a dunce! Some of the patterns are supposed to be for folks with IQs >160 (much higher than yours truly!). Hopefully you got one of them :)

Hi I'm interested in participating in the study but don't really need any compensation is there away to do that?
regards
Cheshire_Kat

Hi, @Cheshire_Kat! Unfortunately, it would be unethical for us to let folks participate and not offer compensation! (or -- more practically -- the Yale IRB would not allow us! Haha)

Is your concern data privacy? If so, the survey should include prompts guiding you for setting up email forwarding with a new email -- that way your real email is never saved anywhere :)

Please let me know if you have any difficulties setting this up! I am more than happy to help troubleshoot how to keep folks from using their actual information for payment. I'd be able to then update the survey with better instructions :)

Ethics? um ... OK for me it's Karma based not privacy
No problemo ...
I'll just give it away later somehow ;)

Thank you for your quick response ❤️

Yes, I did provide my email in case I qualify for other studies related to psychedelics. Thank you for your kind words.

I completed the study, and its pretty interesting. I think I've got a guess of what they are looking for, but it could be a variety of things.

It does take about 2 hours, even if you are a fast reader, and some of the tasks are kind of entrancing.

Ddefinately worthwhile pay (I've done some psych studies in person which pay way less than this for the amount of time; though they did give me TMS which was cool).

Hmm... Do you have to go there personally or is it over the internet ? Because Yale is about 30 minutes away from where I live. If they had any studies going on at UCONN that would only be 10 minutes away.

Over the internet

Hi, @nico665! I am submitting payment requests today to our lab manager and so I am hopeful that those requesting Amazon gift cards should receive theirs today or if not today extremely soon! The VISA gift cards would then be shipped today so I think they ought to come no later than next week.

Hi, @MedicinalUser247! While this study is entirely online, if you are in the area I highly recommend you check to see whether or not you might qualify for one of the clinical trials at Yale University (https://clinicaltrials.gov/search?l...ven, CT&distance=51&aggFilters=status:not rec) many should be recruiting by September. We will be allowing folks to not only do these same games and questionnaires but also record EEG! If you have no mental health diagnoses, you may also be able to participate in a study launching in the next year or 2 looking at comparative effects of DMT and 5-MeO-DMT :) where we will also be administering some measures.
