Okay, I had a House-like moment while at the doctor's office a little while ago. A drug I take for narcolepsy, called Xyrem, has a potential interaction with bupropion (Wellbutrin/Zyban). Xyrem, for those not taking it, is sodium oxybate. The drug has two metabolites, water and CO2. But it also releases dopamine throughout the night. A LOT of domapine. This you can gauge by the headache you have with the blood pressure spike that ensues. Anyway, this isn't just your regular old, run-of-the-mill dopamine release, like the body does every day. The additional amounts cannot be absorbed easily by your decidedly limited number of dopamine reuptakes, increasing the half life of the stuff from about 4 minutes to 36 hours or more. Because of the way that Wellbutrin works with dopamine, essentially every time you smoke a cigarette you are receiving an unspecific but undeniable extra 'reward' for smoking. If you are thinking of using Wellbutrin to help you quit smoking, avoid any use of the drug Sodium Oxybate. It will most certainly have the opposite effect from what you expect.
What a month.
