No you're not right.

Alprazolam is short acting and has a fast onset. It is especially effective for very strong anxiety and panic attacks. Diazepam is long acting, has a slower onset and a very long half life. Diazepam is more sedative and hypnotic and is more relaxing. It is much better suited for sleep.

I like Valium much more than Xanax. It doesn't get you all fucked up like Xanax, and is perfect for long-lasting, subtle relaxation.

Xanax hits you over the head with a sledgehammer, but is gone way too quickly, leading to compulsive redosing and dependence. You can take one Valium in the morning and be good all day. Valium doesn't last too long either, but its long-half life prevents any rebound anxiety.

Like Cyanoide said, Xanax is perfect for panic attacks, while Valium is perfect for mild-moderate generalized anxiety.

Both have the same time onset and general peak intensity time. However, diazepam's peak is longer lasting. Diazepam is more sedating, it's a stronger muscle-relaxant, stronger anti-convulsant, and nicer overall. Alprazolam and diazepam are equally anxiolytic (0.5 alprazolam = 10 mg diazepam).

I prefer Valium to Xanax myself. I tried Xanax once and even after taking crazy high doses was not very impressed with it. Clonazepam is my benzo of choice. It has a shorter half life than Valium with the same speed of onset and the same effects and intensity per dose for everything other than muscle relaxation (I found Valium to be a better muscle relaxant than cyclobenzaprine). The benefit of clonazepam over Valium (diazepam) is the shorter half life. Clonazepam doesn't have the same duration and intensity of hangover that Valium has, yet it lasts long enough that there's not the come down you get with Xanax.

The nitty gritty's been covered here really. Anything else is persona choice.. we get a lot of threads like this and the debate can run and run, so I'm going to close it.

PM me with any queries :)
