buying movies/games or audio CDs seems very bullshit to me. i dont understand why people pay for these kinda entertainment instead download it from emule or something?

what do you think?
(dont tell me its against the law to download copyright material lol:))

I download bootlegs of concerts (which you CAN'T buy in stores...)

Why does it seem very bullshit, though? Wouldn't you wanna make some money off your publicized creations?

because independent labels, small distributors, and artists who aren't top50 pop stars are losing their livelihoods.

elektra, do you work? if so - presumably you don't mind not getting paid for your work. i would be very happy if you would give me your paychecks. is that ok with you? can i expect your next paycheck to be transferred to my account?

no? then why exactly should the people behind the scenes suffer just because you like to steal? :) let me rephrase the post and see if it makes any more sense.

I don't understand why people buy CDs when you could just steal them from shops.

do you steal from shops? no? if so, why not? is it just because you might get caught, or do you feel that stealing is inherently wrong?

Madonna isn't going to go broke because some teenagers downloaded her latest album. but that local indie band who play great innovative music will never have a chance, because people don't like to pay for their work. that awesome DJ who produces great tunes is going to watch their work go down the pan because kids with thousand-dollar computers and expensive cable internet connections simply take their music without paying. if you're happy listening to mindless top 50 pop rubbish, then by all means go ahead, because music will only ever be stifled by the processes which ensure that only mass-marketed shit makes money. i've watched record labels, artists and distributors go out of business because people don't buy CDs, especially in smaller genres. these people are NOT out to become pampered rock stars. they are NOT trying to rip off kids to buy themselves a limo. they are usually in the business because they love the music and they want to promote new talent. if you're happy to look these people in the eye and tell them they shouldn't get paid for what they do, then by all means go ahead. but don't expect to hear any new or exciting music.

it shits me to tears when people bitch about buying CDs. most people spend more on drugs in a week than they do buying CDs in a year. most people use a faster computer with a faster internet connection to download stolen music than the people who make the music in the first place.

no, music is not all about money. and no, artists are not all pampered wannabe divas. and no, it is not reasonable to expect artists to starve just because you think it's ok to be a thief.

let me rephrase again:

I can't understand why people would want to go to work when they could easily break into elektra's house and steal their money.

make sense now?

;)

well, technically it is illegal, esp. in the USA, where big hollywood money exerts its influence on the political sphere. drugs are illegal, too, but we all know thats bullshit.

there's a great film that was just released regarding the recent pirate bay raid which explains how hollywood pressured the us government, which in turn pressured the swedish government to confiscate not only thepiratebay.com servers, but all the servers in the data center that hosted them. it's an open source film made by the bitttorrent communtiy itself in response to the increasing pressure to prosecute the trackers(like piratebay) and the dumps(like torrentspy) as well as individual users. the torrent file is available at http://stealthisfilm.com or if you don't know how to do bittorrent (yet), it has been downloaded to youtube (in three parts) and google video. this is a free, noncopyright movie, so i hope i am not violating the BL directive about not posting links to torrent files.

not only payin for entertainment is bullshit, money is bullshit too for me. money is preventing our life quality and force us to work and earn money which is bullshit as well.

If money is bulshit, then why do you accept it as compensation for work done? If working is bulshit, why work? If the values life throws at you are bulshit, why do you still accept them, live with them, yet deny others those same values?

Hypocrisy abounds! I am still amazed at mods here editing users' links to file sharing sites and materials, yet blatantly posting and accepting posts with links to gigs and gigs worth of copyrighted material... in "live set" form. If I went to a cinema today and recorded five continuous hours worth of blockbuster films, then posted a link to this "live set", would that be acceptable? Why not? Because it doesn't suit your idea of copyright; your brand of values?

As seuss said above and as I've posted numerous times before, people have to wake up to the fact that work is not free. It's too late hough. This "I want, I want, I want! Gimme, gimme gimme!" brand of consumerism of the 21st century is probably what will finally tip the world on end and drive the west into poverty while raising the east (read China) from the same. Serves both just right!

Because you have to. Fuck the system. Download whatever you want. Enough idiots are paying inflated prices for it anyways.

^^ i can live with that but i need money:) because the system forces all of us to earn money. i can say fuck money yeah but i still need it anyway. i'm just sayin that, there are certain things that you can have access without paying anything.

so do the people who make that copyrighted material
because the system forces all of us to earn money.
as it does them

as do they

what about the people who made those things? can they have access to your toils without paying?

As though making a recording of a copyrighted recording is the same as a recording of a live performance...

The difference between a bootleg and a counterfet is that a bootleg is an original recording (albeit an "unofficially" obtained one) and a counterfeit is nothing more than an illegal copy of something already being sold. You taping a movie DOES NOT compare to me taping a concert because the recording you make of the movie is akin to the movie itself (therefore a counterfit) whereas my concert tape is unique.

and here is a perfect example of the warped logic I speak of

True, but the record companies aren't concerned about bootlegs, really. If they don't want bootlegs then they have to start recording all their concerts.

How is that warped logic?
