Like I know for example plenty of meth heads and some opiate abusers eventually just settle on drinking all the time once they get clean from there drug of choice.

They are still active addicts and still want/need to alter their mind states with hard drugs, but alcohol (even to excess) is the only hard drug that's widely socially acceptable in the United States.

They still have all the baggage and feelings and thought processes that are making them use hard drugs, but settle on one that's acceptable to the middle-aged people they hang out or work with.

Work and family switched me to booze.

You do have a very nice answer ErgicMergic.

In a way it makes me understand why I'm drinking so much and why its been so hard to quit.

Yeah I think Ergic hit the nail right on the head there. It makes complete sense.

I guess it's also a way to make former addicts feel better about themselves or situation, for example "yep I haven't touched meth in 6 months I'm clean now all I do is drink" when in reality alcohol is still a drug and though alcohol isn't as hard a drug as meth or heroin it can sure ruin ones life in more ways than one.

Hell yeah common as.
I'm a self confessed daily beer drinker with alcoholic tendencies that tell's himself although i am a daily drinker of beer i have plenty of days where i stop at the one beer. Yes i used drugs when i was younger and still dabble in occasional meth use but i don't have hepatitis c and my liver function tests are good for the time being. if my doctor tells me it's life or death i need to stop drinking i reckon i could stop. I quit smoking 6 years ago so i do have some self control.

But yeah from times in mental health wards all the teenagers and 20 year old's have drug problems and all the 35+ year old's are heavy drinkers who are cigarette smokers.

Good topic ovo1024 as i've heard people in NA say some addicts swap the bitch for witch and become alcoholic's seeing as it's easier to be functioning Alcoholic than full blown junkie dope sick or tweaked out of it all the time

Easy to get, don't get hassled as much by family and friends, don't get persecuted by the law unless you drive. Don't have to worry about peeing in a cup. Its real a shame as alcohol is the most unhealthy drug.

Alcohol is also great at numbing emotional pain. Back when I was going through a hard part in my life I was an alcoholic because it really helped me sleep at night. A large part of it was i guess in a lot of ways i was unhappy so it made stopping very difficult until my life dramatically changed and i no longer felt the need.

Funny enough I smoke weed daily, some days more then I would prefer to however, its not for the same reasons at all. When I was drinking i would drink to excess and try to get to a specific point that was probably unhealthy... with weed its more about relaxing then wanting to get to the point where I would pass out in a stupor.

Some are going to say its 2 sides of the same coin but trust me i am infinitely better off as a stoner then an alcoholic, i very much prefer this version of me then the heroin addict or alcoholic version. And its the "original" version which always is best anyway ;)

I've always liked the quote "I'm sanitizing internal wounds."
Alcohol is also good for numbing physical pain to a point.

Tonight I'm drinking for the usual relief of work and stress, but also because I smashed my hand with a hammer, and using a pick axe all week kills my back.
No pain killers so I'm drinking till sleep. Maybe take Sunday off to relax and recuperate.

I hate to say that its "nice" to see other people in the same boat as me, but it is very comforting to know that there are others out there that ended up doing the same thing.

i assume because they get sick and tired of the copping drugs game, and like the consistency and availability of booze.

I saw this one show title "Drinking Made Easy." Drinking isn't made easy it just is easy. Its the Staple's "Easy" button of drugs for many reasons. And the older you get the more you say fuck all those high priced drugs and dangerous situations I just wanna get fucked up I can pick up a 12 pack after work and be watching TV in 20 minutes.

Good answer but it's just too bad that alcohol is so socially acceptable but such a terrible buzz when compared to the illegal ones..alcohol simply just numbs me anymore..ugg

Yeah but don't you feel like shit the day after drinking?maybe not a full blown hangover but just very low mood, energy etc etc?

I actually took the opposite route. I used to drink a lot in the military never was an alcoholic or anything like that but I had to quit drinking because it always made me feel like shit in the morning and started to give me stomach problems. After military service I was prescribed benzo's and opiates and believe me they numb my pain better than alcohol in my opinion. Plus no hangover or outbursts of anger DUI's etc.
