Who hear likes what is being called "EDM?"

Can’t stand it. It’s just way too predictable for me. Shit just gets boring when every single song they play follows the same formula. May as well just listen to the beatport top 100 on repeat at home for free. Why am I going to pay someone tons of cash to hear some shit I can hear on the Radio?

I don’t care about lighting, I don’t care about costumes, I don’t care how much money they poured into some ridiculous spectacle that only distracts from the music. The best parties I have been to have been in an abandoned warehouse with just a single strobe light, thousands of other people, a killer sound system and some amazing music.

When I go out to see a DJ I want to hear tons of music I wouldn’t normally hear anywhere else. I want to hear them play shit that makes me think “What the fuck is this?! Where the fuck did this guy find this track!”.. except I really don’t want to know what it is.. I want it to remain a mystery so I can only hear it again if I see said DJ.

I understand why many young people eat this shit up though, They were born in an era where instant gratification is the order of the day and have come to expect it in their music. It's no fault of their own, it's just what they know.

It’s all good though. Eventually the mega-corporation pop rave scene will implode as all pop scenes do. 90% of the listeners will move onto the next big trend while 10% will stick around when it’s returned to the underground and hated by the general public once again.

It's all garbage. I've been a massive techno fan for quite a few years now, none of it will ever get played on the radio and none of the DJs will ever headline a festival, and that's just perfect. It really is all about the music, not the money or image.
 
There's a lot of REALLY quality productions in the Electro House genre. A lot of the big names will just sell tracks due to their name though, they don't feel the need to put the time into perfecting their songs and it REALLY shows.

Typically I just look for bootlegs/mashups, they tend to add a lot of flair to an unoriginal song and turn it into something amazing.

I think we all know that. It's just another corruption of a good thing by American corporate leaders. The guy who wrote the thread admitted it's pop music. I can guarantee that if we were back in 2004 most of these EDM fans would be into Rap music and call followers of Jungle, House, Techno, Trance ect. weirdos. These people are pop music fans and will most likely stop listenin to what they call EDM by the age of 25.
 
^ Yeah, because there is NO ONE that truly enjoys electro house.. that's just why it's playing at every major festival across the world. "America" has nothing to do with this, the same kind of festivals are happening in Europe, Australia and South America. Asia is going crazy for it right now.


I don't like rap, it's focuses on the vocals MUCH too much for myself. Electronic music is typically made to be very high impact, with pounding bass lines and big build ups. Some people hide behind the gimmicks.. and their music shows it. Just because something is popular doesn't make it bad though - people forget that the same genres that are MASSIVE now are the ones that were considered "underground" a few years ago. It's the same music, you've just got a lot more people who enjoy it.




The biggest reason why a lot of the songs lack depth lies in the fact that most of the producers don't feel the need to be original. Simply copying the format of what's "popular" seems to be all some "artists" know how to do. You'll always have a few who are willing to experiment and push the boundaries of music however... those are the ones who have true talent. Unfortunately, big gimmicky names like Aoki tend to outshine them..

Loads of live streams and tons of archived stuff which is just simply amazing. You'll find awesome techno and house as well as some other stuff. If I'm not out at a club on the weekend, I'm watching live streams from some amazing club around the world.

You got this idiot Folley, who is tryin to say this pop music is good music but complaining about the majority of it lackin quality. It's pop music. You have idiots goin to concerts callin it a rave. People who don't know the difference between Techno and Trance but say they like dance music. And nobody complaining about the EDM name and it's corporate basis. The name didn't even exist until thr mid 2000's when it started to pick up amongst the mainstream crowd and the small number of major record labels noticed. The genre's were always known as their individual names eg. Trance, Jungle, House ect. or Electronic music or Dance music because the forerunner genre the first of these genres (House) was Disco. It's a corporate name like how theu exceeded all of these rubbish singers and called it R&B despite R&B being dead since the early 60's.

Yeah, I remember back when you'd go into a mall record store and there would be a section called Electronic. Usually small.
Some better record stores would actually split up by genre.

I can't even begin to imagine what people who lived thru the 90s party culture might think. Even in the late 90s, early 2000s the dance music scene was taking a nose dive.

But there's always going to be a legit core of people who do it for the love and community based music. And there's always going to be an underground where people don't really care about selling records.

I definitely agree that EDM IS pop music and pop music is EDM. Those people are casuals. They faze out their party lifestyle in their mid 20s climbing the social ladder. And turn their nose at people still going at it much later in life.
I shrudder to think what kind of mutant these people will turn into 30s and what kind of music will be created for them, what kind of lifestyle commercialism will create for them.

I understand what you mean about "normal club music". That R&B, hip-hop, david guetta stuff is EDM for people who don't like EDM, rap for people who don't like rap, and hip-hop for people who don't like hip-hop. It's all garbage.

Now, if you listened to a true artist, say Armin van Buuren, and have ever been to one of his shows rolling your ass off on some good molly, you would understand EXACTLY why people like true electronic music. It is a universal language...everyone dancing in the crowd come from all different ethnic backgrounds and even speak different languages, but they all understand each other through the one truly universal language: electronic music. I used to be the same way and thought it was "new age garbage" and trust me, some of it is...like what the hell is "dubstep"?? F**** grabage.

But a good progressive trance track from a great artist in the right circumstances is genuinely euphoric. Give it a go!

No, of course not. The problem is the producer's NAME is so big, they can release just about anything and it'll be a hit. "Turn Down For What" was made by DJ snake and originally had different lyrics.. it wouldn't have NEAR the popularity it does if Lil Jon didn't add 6 words before the drop. Most people couldn't care less what genre or song is playing as long as it's someone famous who is playing it... and that's the biggest problem these days, as far as I see it.


Still, for me to be called an "idiot" for saying I like Electro House is pretty damn laughable. That's what was "underground" a few years ago. It's the same music, more people just happen to like it these days. The only thing you've lost is your ability to be a hipster and pretend you're musically different from everyone else. No one really cares if you "listened to techno first", we just want to enjoy the music at the end of the day and personally I LOVE electro. Most of what I play is remixes/mashups of popular artists by smaller producers however. There are some really lame "pop" tracks that I DON'T play; but I wouldn't write off whole genres just because I've heard what is pumped to the lowest common denominator.



TL;DR - Electro House is the shit, I don't care who listens to it and neither should you.


Then again, when all the songs on the Beatport top 10 sound exactly the same... there's obviously a block of creativity happening somewhere down the line.

People must be gettin stupider as the years go by. Where did I ever say Electro House was rubbish? I only criticised EDM mainstream rubbish. Which you defended and also combined with Electro House in your argument. Read your juxtaposing first two paragraphs. You answered your first paragraph statement in the second one. And also helped my argument about corporate mainstream based corruption of the music. This is not something unique to Dance music. Rap already got churned out and the end result is Lil Wayne and Rick Ross. So did Rock music. Only natural for the corporate bosses to look for something else to get their hands on once they realised that Rap music's sales were in decline.

I think everybody has realised Beatport Top 10 is absolutely crap. Once again the trail of EDM smeared on something causing deleterious results.

I can't stand mainstream shit in general. And nobody can tell me that 'only because it is popular' crap. If the original following gives something a thumbs down, it is no good. People will argue all day long but the original is real everything else is offshoots if an offshoot is corrupted then it should be shot at so to speak before it affects the outlook of all offshoots. What I am saying is real music fans of all genres should distance themselves and seek to remove the rubbish made by mainstream mass media led foolishness. Majority of these people who are into mainstream versions of any genre have little interest in anything than acting cool and been seen as part of the crowd. They will easily turn on the prior underground scene and seek to change it. In Rap music major labels managed to pressurise minor indie labels into producing wannabe mainstream music. This killed even the underground spirit of Rap causing more infighting amongst underground fans than with that of the mainstream vs underground argument. The same handful of major record labels also operate with the EDM artists. With the Beatport business we are seeing the same pressure applied as with Rap music and Rock music.
 
I think we can totally place the blame solely on the genre that is called "Big Room House."

It is to the point where you can interchange EDM with Big Room House. That's where people's wires are getting crossed, aka The Media. I'm obviously not saying Electronic Music is BRH, but I've seen news coverage where they've assumed thats what "rave culture" has become. Its definitely whats hot right now in the US.

Its funny because I don't really listen to that specific genre too often. It has its place, I guess.
 
^ Even big room can be good. The problem is, a lot of these "famous" producers simply aren't taking any effort to creatively set themselves apart. Take a look at "Raveology" and "Bounce Generation"... it's the exact same fucking song.

Still, I love house. Hell, I even like trap and getting down to some dirty dubstep is not a fucking problem for me. Yet there's an OBVIOUS difference in what is "popular" and what has made a name for itself because it is quality music. That doesn't cause me to write off whole genres however, just because a few producers don't know the meaning of innovation doesn't mean no one is trying new things. Good music is good music, I don't care what you call it or who else listens to it. It's just majorly unfortunate that a large amount of what is being made these days.. isn't good music.
