I never got a chance to play these when they came out, but within the last 6 months I have beaten Silent Hill 2, 3, and 4. I haven't played part 1 except for the beginning, but I've read the plot synopsis and what happens at the end.

These games are excellent and, with the exception of 4, genuinely scary to play in a dark room. If I had to create a list of which one I think has the best atmosphere and plot, I would say part 2. It's also the easiest out of the three that I've played. 3 was good in the sense that you never felt comfortable at all while playing it, assuming you played it all by yourself with the lights turned down, but the plot was not as interesting as 2. 4 felt like an adventure game, and there was never a point at which you needed a flashlight, so it definitely felt totally different from the other two. The plot was pretty interesting, but the atmosphere was nothng compared to 2.

I can't wait until part 5 comes out, and I wish there was a way I could play the PSP version without buying a PSP.

Anyone else love these games?

I also thoroughly enjoy the atmosphere created by this series.

The noises are definitely the best part. I played 1 2 3 and have 4, but never got into it. I have considered loading it back up on my pc though. 4 is the wall or something, right?

If you like this style of game you might also enjoy bioshock. Very creepy game as well. The noises are pretty great in it as well.

i played the first one and i have to say it's the only game that has ever genuinely scared me, more than most horror films even.

Interesting
I rented a 360 and Bioshock, and it reminds of how scared I was when me and my friends rented Silent Hill when it first came out
I almost have trouble forcing myself to play these types of games sometimes. They are fun, and the scariness is also fun... but really. I have enough goddamn stress as it is hehe

4 is the wall or something, right?

4 is "the room." it's the most difficult out of the series, even on normal mode. it stays interesting throughout, and it is almost a blessing in disguise that it is not as creepy as the others. sometimes when i walked into a new building in 3 I just felt bad and sick to my stomach lol, which makes the game much harder to play since you creep everywhere instead of running.

I'm getting Bioshock right now. When I read the suggestion to check it out in this thread I didn't take it seriously, but the reviews are pretty excellent.... you have to forgive me, there are plenty of games that are supposed to be scary like "the suffering" that are just action games - not bad action games - but definitely not as genuinely scary as the silent hill games.

Yea i played both 1 and 3.....and a lil bit of 2.....

Kick ass games....and yea playing in a dark room is not cool....

I was really let down by the movie though....what about yall?

The silent hill movie didn't capture the non-stop, stomache churning dreadful feeling that you get when you play the games. I was not disappointed in it, however, as it had one of the best boss fights ever. And the plot was interesting as well.

Very few films are as scary and uncomfortable as a silent hill video game.

Damn I just decided to start playing silent hill and made a bad decision by starting with SH4: The Room. Played it for an hour but it didnt really interest me and didnt find it freaky at all. But from what I've read Silent Hill 2 seems to be the most creepiest so I'll give it a go and then finish SH4.

...but then it might have been those pills ;)

i haven't gotten into this series. i might've played the original but i was all horrored out by that stage. the novelty wore off pretty quickly for me.

Out of all of them, I must say that I enjoy #4 the most. But I've played 'Origins' a lot and the first, second and third were very interesting. I can't say that I've felt genuinely scared due to the games, but there have been points where I've jumped and thought "Oh, despite expecting that, it was still somewhat thrilling."

I enjoyed the first quite a lot and found it to be rather different and interesting when compared to many of the other titles out there. As I mention later on in this post, I feel it unfair that the game was initially compared to 'Resident Evil/Biohazard', though I'm certainly a fan of that series, but I also know that there wasn't anything else to compare the original 'Silent Hill' to; not a gaming master-piece, but certainly something that used new ideas and was fairly unique at the time.

With all of the games, I've found a certain irritation at the numerous monsters that're both repetetive, everywhere and impossible to kill in certain circumstances.

The fourth didn't bother me that much. The most irritating being 'Origins', however, with all of these games the desire to uncover the plot has driven me to overlook the flaws--bad camera angles that can cause you to suddenly turn direction and end up running back the way you came in 'Origins', the waking up again and again on your bed in 'The Room' and some others I can't recall right now--and complete the game.

The entire story of 'Silent Hill' seems rather thrilling and draws one in. The 'Biohazard/Resident Evil' series is of a different genre in my opinion and they can't really be compared. I'm a fan of both, though.

I never played the games but i sure loved the movie. I hope they make a sequel to the first one. And that little girl was sooooooooooo freaky. Maybe someday I'll check out the game.

Rpg

IMO, the first one was the best and it will never be matched. Simply because it had the element of surprise. I had never played a game THAT frightening. With every game after that, I could mentally prepare myself for the headfucking I was about to receive.
Not only was SH1 really scary but there was also the fact that you had no clue what the fuck was going on. You never learn what happened to people of Silent Hill. You never learn if the reality shifts are real or just in Harry's head. The atmosphere is just bleak and desperate.

I've noticed that people who play SH2 before SH1 tend to like SH2 better. And vice versa. SH2 fixed a lot of gripes people had with SH1.
SH1 had shabby graphics, an incoherent plot and was really fucking hard on the first playthrough. It had great graphics, a plot that made sense, and was fairly breezy to play through.
The only problem was that it just wasn't that scary. It was creepy and the boss battles were pretty tense. But there's nothing in SH2 that could compare with Midwich Elementary.

SH3 was fun but it just didn't do much for me. It was a little too Resident Evil for my liking. I mean, a machine gun? That's RE territory.
This game tried to fill in some of the plot holes left in SH1. I would have preferred if they had just left SH1 an enigma. A fun game. Probably the best joke ending of the series too.

I only played SH4 for a couple hours.

The mystery is something of an attraction; will you end up finding out why all of this madness is occurring around you, or will you simply end up more confused than when you first started?

I love the idea of the radio and the torch (flashlight) allowing one to see the 'shadows' of certain almost-invisible enemies, etc. The idea of the radio crackling in the presence of an enemy and such was great, but could have been vastly improved upon. Needing batteries for a torch, anyone? Or how about the radio adding more than simple white noise; voices, screams, anything to put you off guard when you feel safe? Y'know, to keep even the most fearless players on edge?

The aiming system in 'Silent Hill: Origins' annoyed me somewhat as in the theatre, the puppets could kill me quickly because I'd find it difficult to finish them off.

As for 'Resident Evil', the games are fairly predictable and I found that only the "REmake" actually frightened me with its ominous music and the 'Crimson heads' that just get up when you're hoping they won't. The extra puzzles were great, too, as well as the idea of zombies entering through doors to chase you; you're never truly safe in that game. Tight spaces and multiple zombies make things challenging and it's interesting!

Plus, there're so many prizes offered in return for completing the game. It's the same with the fourth, though that's more action-orientated than stalking through dark corridoors with few enemies, yet can still be challenging; projectile weapons to be shot down, instances involving rapid button tapping or wiimote waving to have the, to be frank, very sexy Leon leap over debris and through lasers. I must've played through the knife fight at least ten times simply because it's so much fun and I found it to be the best part of the game, considering the rest is tame and doesn't involve much of a challenge.
