Which benzo is right for me?

So I've had some history with benzos... Been prescribed lorazepam, diazepam, and clonazepam. I liked clonazepam a lot, but it made me too sedated. However, it was very potent. I like diazepam because its very mild and relazing without making you retarded, but I dont like having benzos in my system for over a hundred hours, because it interferes with my classes (taking calculus 2 right now. benzos + math = fail). I felt really stupid on lorazepam and it induced a lot of amnesia. Im about to go to the doctor again soon for a new script. I was recently interested in bromazepam but it's not FDA approved in the US.

Here's what I'm looking for:

-therapeutic anxiolytic properties (not interested in abuse) in which I can function and not be too sedated and want to sleep. I want to go out and be social on the drug.

-intermediate half life (diazepam is way too long, and clonazepam is too sedating and gives a hangover) because I'm quitting drinking and short acting ones might give WDs

-something that doesnt give too much amnesia

Any thoughts on what would be the best? what about temazepam?

i disagree.. not all benzos are the same

that's like saying all psychedelics are the same or all the strains of weed are the same

No it doesn't go that far at all. It's more like saying all skittles taste the same. I've done at least 8 different benzos extensively and apart from duration of action don't notice much difference. Perhaps because I've always used at high doses.

was just gonna say that.. lol
well i suppose they all taste like the rainbow so both sides of the skittles argument have merit.. :\

Can we get back to benzos, so we don't derail the OPs thread?

OP- despite having amnesia from lorazepam, was there any other bad effects? because if that is it than just take a lower dose and it won't happen.. i personally think that would be the best and easiest benzo for you to get :)

Yeah I agree. They all feel different. Some more hypnotic, some more PNS sedating, some more cognitive sedating, etc.

I agree Swerlz.

OP if you haven't seen this list on wikipedia it's helpful.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_benzodiazepines

Ive seen lists like that, but theres no indication whether or not certain ones are FDA approved and available in the US.

Have a gander over at Serax

this may be something that could help you. It's not too potent and it's prescribed for EtOH w/d

I looked into that with some BL searches. Everyone said it sucked, but I guess they were talking about recreational value. Ill probably end up getting clonazepam or oxazepam.

Okay, seeing as you are in the United States, your options are somewhat limited. You will have a realistic chance of being prescribed very few of that list on wiki. There is not a huge 'selection' in the US. For anxiety you have: lorazepam (ativan) diazepam (valium) alprazolam (xanax) clonazepam (klonopin) oxazepam (serax) and chlordiazepoxide (librium). Serax and librium are somewhat very weak imo, but it may just be what you're looking for. I have had luck with librium during withdrawals but other than that I never found any pleasure recreationally in them. Then again you seem very concerned to treat a real medical problem so they may just be right up your alley. Remember there are also the 'z' drugs (ambien, sonata0 and your hypnotic benzodiazepines approved in the US: triazolam and temazepam (which probably wouldn't fit the script for your uses)

Best of luck.

That helped a lot; thanks for spelling it all out. Diazepam is my therapeutic favorite but clonazepam really gets the job done and has a shorter half life. I'm probably going to go for oxazepam 30mg or clonazepam 2mg (then split them). The only reason Im starying to shy away from oxazepam is because they come in capsule form only instead of tabs.

What exactly is the problem with a capsule? Do you find them hard to swallow? Oxazepam is relatively weak tbh, it is a metabolite of quite a few benzodiazepines and one of the metabolites drug testing looks for to indicate benzodiazepine usage. To show an example of comparison, 30mg of Oxazepam is equal to .5-.75mg of clonazepam...

Etizolam is absolutely the most clear-headed benzo-class drug I've taken (not a benzo actually, perhaps why). It beats the hell out of oxazepam IMO, but with equally clear frame of mind.

^ I agree.. but I believe you can't get Etizolam prescribed here in the US. You'd have to have someone ship it to you from elsewhere

Low dose alprazolam (0.25 mg - 0.5 mg) isn't very sedating, it hits quick so you might feel that it is a little too powerful, but is a good anxiolytic. It is short acting, one of the shortest, so there is that, but might be something to consider. It is a good benzo to be used as needed, not too good for daily use because of its mentioned short duration of effects, and the feeling of needing to re-dose.

I like to dose benzos sublingually for greater bioavailability and quicker onset... and sometimes cut them up to adjust the dose.

But anyways, thanks for the info. I'll probably get clonazepam, and dose a little lower than last time I got rx'd it. Too bad the FDA sucks.
