It is a group of spiritual individuals from all over the world and all types of religions that just want to make things better for the earth, a lot of there events are based on bartering no cash is usually allowed so you trade food for clothes gems drinks shelter anything. Sometimes they get a bad rap, but the overall goal is bettering mother earth.

I grew up with rainbow valley just down the road , there was gatherings all the time - a lot of fun. They would check you driving in the gate and only confiscated alcohol ...... Lotsa psychedelics ect. , music , vendors , spirit circles .....good people. Was owned by Gideon Israel ( I believe originally they all changed last names to Israel ) until the state found a way to take his land away. Family has dwindled away quite a bit , but there is still state gatherings , natn'l gatherings and ( I believe ) world gatherings.
You can find limited info online and used to be some vids from some gatherings on YouTube ......

They used to have lots of good LSD and would give people thumbprints (smashing one's thumb into the raw crystal so that it goes through the skin) of LSD as an initiation rite. After that, the initiate would be given a new name (such as 'superglue' or 'Cosmic Bob'). They are the ones who will run to the hills and live off the land once mandatory microchipping, ebola, and martial law become commonplace. They have been readying for the collapse of society since the 1960s.

Was the legendary rainbow road, a route of backroads across the US used by smugglers and persecuted subcultures tied in with the Rainbow family?

I went to a rainbow gathering, but that was quite awhile ago. From what I recall it was good fun. That time period is pretty hazy from all the L i was taking.

It may be just as an insightful state of mind .. a good one I suppose

No, I don't think the Rainbow family and rainbow road have anything in common. In the 1980s and 1990s, the modus operandi for LSD distribution was--at the wholesale level--via the postal service.
