so i always hear people here on bluelight talking about mephedrone. After doing some reaseardch, all i have heard is that is a amphetamine/stimulant. So is mephedrone just Meth?

Mephedrone (4-methylmethcathinone) is a cathinone--a type of stimulant similar to amphetamines/cocaine. It is still technically legal in the U.S., though it's been banned in the U.K. and China (where most of it was manufactured).

It became wildly popular in Europe between 2007 and 2010 and was then outlawed following some deaths that were later found to be caused by a combination of drugs rather than mephedrone alone. Not much is known about its long-term risks, and some scary side effects have been seen in users (skin discoloration, difficulty breathing, palpitations). It is becoming increasingly difficult to find due to the Chinese ban, though a few sources still exist in the U.S.

That's about the extent of my knowledge on the subject. :)

Okay, first things first are the basics- Mephedrone is a stimulant/empathogen of the amphetamine and cathinione classes, with its chemical structure being somewhat similar to methamphetamine, although its more comparable to cocaine in that its a synthetic powerful stimulant drug with a similar molecular structure to a comparatively benign stimulant - whereas cocaine is a powerful drug derived from the coca leaf, mephedrone is a powerful stimulant derived from the cathinione compounds found in Khat.

So, in early 2003 some enterprising underground chemist decided to synthesise Mephedrone, and shortly after around 2007 it exploded onto the research chemical scene. A popular research chemical in the late 90s/early 2000s was Methcathinione, and its relationship to Mephedrone can be compared to the difference between Amphetamine and Methamnphetamine - meth is simply amphetamine with a methyl group, this is Methcathinione with a 4-methyl group, which (also like meth) is subsequently more powerful than the compound without the methyl group.

As more people discovered this research chemical with powerful euphoric effects comparable to that of drugs like cocaine or ecstasy was available legally over the internet for as little as £10/gram ($15), its popularity began to soar. It took off in Europe a long time before the US, and it became paticularly popular in the UK (personally I think if it never got big here the whole world could still enjoy it, but trust someone to ruin it for everyone, but that's a different matter).

Mephedrone's effects are perhaps best described as a mix of amphetamine, cocaine and ecstasy. It's been described as the "cocaine of ecstasy" which I think is a very fitting title, as it embodies the similarity in effects of ecstasy and cocaine (you have a short but intense peak which is a mixture of the amphetamine/coke-like stimulation with an intense MDMA-esque euphoria) and the title also fittingly draws a comparison between the more-ishness of coke and this substance. Mephedrone has been found to be very addictive and more-ish, and for many users, especially those doing large amounts, it can be difficult to control useage and they may end up going through their entire supply when they didn't mean to, although Mephedrone shows no signs of physical addiction it clearly can have a powerful psychological pull over a user.

It is usually snorted or taken orally, and it's effects are varied, although in general talkativeness, empathy with others, happiness/euphoria, energy/stimulation and a "rush" are the positive effects that users seek. There are also many unintended negative side effects like nausea, teeth grinding, rashes, anxiety, increased or abnormal heart beat, and very worryingly in reports of heavy use serious side effects like vasoconstriction can occur, and in combination with other hard drugs there have been reports of an umber of deaths.

Personally, I think Mephedrone is a fantastic drug, probably the most fun drug I've ever tried, but I also know that it's ultimately unsafe, because as with Mephedrone along with most research chemicals we have no idea what the long term-effects are in the end. Hope I've helped.
