What if everyone in the world was constantly rolling?

I sometimes think about this when I'm bored. It'd be interesting to think of how society would (or wouldn't) operate.

Well considering we would all burn out within 2-3 days tops, society would collapse lol

No really, if everyone was constantly rolling, there would be no sexuality (homo or straight would be the past - bisexuals only), there would be no wars unless someone did something stupid - even then, most every body would be too e-tarded to care, reality would cease to exist and would be replaced by a new one.

Human life span would be cut by at least 40-70 years...

I was going to make a topic just like this two days ago, but I forgot 8) It made me happy to see someone had the same idea!! Mainly because I had TONS of abolitionist propaganda to go along with it =D

As far as rolling like someone does on MDMA it would be the end of the human race. Not feeling hungry would more than likely cause some starvation. Increased blood pressure and heart rate would eventually get to you going long enough. People would be puddling and loving. There would be no responsibility. No people working. Just lots of people hugging and being loved up. It's not productive. Not to say that it's a bad thing... it's just our lives would be much different. I'm fine with that. I just can't think of people tilling the fields or hunting animals all loved up. Electronics, of course, would be out of the question.

we'd be dead within months (if not quicker).

Here's the cool part, though.

What if we were to alter our brain chemistry in such a way that we found being productive and learning pleasurable and loving and caring to be pleasurable and far desirable to hostility and "basic evolutionary defense mechanisms"? I have a great article just about this. Check it out if you have an hour or so or over some spare time!! =D

An entire dissertation by abolitionists (an ethical group interested in genetically altering humanity to experience reality in gradients of bliss and euphoria rather than outdated natural selection instincts that no longer apply to us) about making the whole world a world of loved up people. These are the same guys that own mdma.net, so check it out!!

I mean rolling naturally. A world where humans can't even understand violence or war and just all love and be friends with each other. It would be so HAPPY =D =D =D Creeps out my friends when I talk about it, though. I've had some crazy philosophical debates about this one.

so do i =) To do it, however, we have to all work together as a race to make it a reality. If and when the social attitude of the world shifts to making this a reality, it will.

I am surprised it creeps them out. Sounds like a fun place to be where could be rolling on demand whenever you're not doing anything responsible. :)

Or how about this:

Imagine if the whole felt like the worst comedown you've had? What would happen then? 8o

Our bodies aren't evolved to handle that much serotonin release, but it would be cool if it did.

That's the point made in the link i posted. It would require genetically altering our DNA -- literally taking evolution into our own hands and creating a new species of "human" that was capable of this. For those that were born "emotionally handicapped", there could be wireheading (electronically permanently altering brain chemistry). It's really an awesome article. Totally worth the long read =D

So rolling without all the bad side effects? that would be awesome! everybody would help each other out all the time and we would prosper as human beings.

yes what you are talking about is just wrong on so many levels and unnatural in so many ways. genetically engineering a permanent X trip? or practically brainwashing people into always being perky and happy? no those other emotions are what allow us to survive and adapt. we need those just as much if not more so than happiness.

I was waiting for this =) I've never understood why it's imperative that we stay tied down to our primitive survival instincts. In a world where we have practically overcome natural selection what is the point of continuing to experience negative emotion so profoundly? Why not change ourselves so we experience our mistakes in quiet, cheerful understanding rather than constantly berating ourselves and our mistakes? Of what purpose is jealousy in this society? Of anger or hate for other humans? I'm not talking about brainwashing -- who doesn't want to be happy? I'm not talking about a traditional x trip, either.

"What if we were to alter our brain chemistry in such a way that we found being productive and learning pleasurable and loving and caring to be pleasurable and far desirable to hostility and 'basic evolutionary defense mechanisms'?"

This is what I was referring to. I'm not talking about removing survival instinct -- I'm talking about altering it so it doesn't cause emotional and psychological grief.

This thread started off as pure fail, but im liking where its going

IMO, we need anger. Otherwise, we do stuff that we dont even know is wrong. Anger in others is our cue that we fucked up. How many times have you seen someone do something so stupid you couldnt believe it while they were rolling? I know its happened to me quite a few times. Not saying that it wouldnt be nice to be happy more often, but bad emotions have their place.

Me, too =) I don't think the philosophy forum would put up with this, but it's a neat philosophical debate that I'm glad to carry on here.

Never, actually. Anger is a completely fear based emotion. If you're angry, you're afraid of something. Disgust is what you seem to be describing which is a reaction to something that you feel is gross. This is completely culturally influenced.

Anger is one of two reactions to fear. We either run away or we fight. Anger is an emotion of that fighting spirit. We learn things are culturally right and wrong (right and wrong are also completely cultural) and when someone does something wrong we get afraid because we know that's not the "right" thing to do. We react in anger because doing something different can negatively impact the good of the social group. It's social animal behaviour.

We could rewire the brain to understand cultural rights and wrongs with a neutral, accepting understanding (a property of MDMA that makes it such a key candidate for PTSD) rather than fear or anger.

I know its happened to me quite a few times. Not saying that it wouldnt be nice to be happy more often, but bad emotions have their place.

Bad emotions I feel HAD their place. Fear is the most basic of emotions (birds flying away when you draw near; squirrels, hedgehogs running away when you get near). We're already on our way as a race in defeating natural selection. Without natural selection, fear-based logic (what all animals have) is obsolete. There's no reason to be afraid of predators we don't have.

There's still a lot of work to do on that front, mind you. Animals and whatnot still pose danger to us. Rather than just being oblivious, however, what if we made it so we know to stay away? Or restricted anger or fear-based emotion to only apply to actually harmful situations?

I haven't fully developed my ideas on the subject, but I'd love to find a way to work out the logistics of such a "Utopia" (although I feel any utopia will be a dystopia in some fashion).

Nah, gotta disagree with you there. If someone raped my sister (not that i have one, but for arguments sake) I wouldnt be afraid of that man, but I would be angry. I would also be disgusted (not with her, obviously). But the main emotion is anger.

On the lighter side, if someone is rolling so hard they knock over the dj booth (something ive seen at least three times i can think of) and destroys thousands of dollars of equipment, I would still be disugsted, but id also be angry, even if it wasnt mine and i didnt have to pay for it? why? because even if we are happy, we are still responsible for our actions, and i get angry when people feel like just because they are fucked up/happy/at a rave/etc, that responsibility no longer exists.

And I also have to disagree that fear no longer has its place. Fear of falling is what keeps us from walking off cliffs.
