I have been in and out of the ER four times in the last month for flank pain on my right side. I was recently told it was due to kidney stones in the last week and was treated with IV pain meds and fluids. I was told that if my pain didn't get any better in a few days I should return to the emergency room for further treatment. Tonight I was unable to get relief and decided to go in to see if I was passing the stone. Among arrival I was sent to the labor and delivery floor since I am 26 weeks pregnant. The OBGYN on call for the night told me that she couldn't see a stone on the ultra sound of my kidney and gave me two Tylenol and sent me on my way. Unhappy with my treatment and doubled over in pain I decided to head to the hospital across town and get a second opinion on my kidney stone. As soon as I was seated in a room the nurse started asking my symptoms. As I was describing them to her the Emergency room doctor for the night came in and asked me if I had recently been seen at the other hospital, I had told him I had and that I was unhappy with my treatment and still in a lot of pain. In the middle of explaining what had happened he cut me off and told me he believed I was "Drug seeking" because I have been in and out of the hospital four times in the last month. I was confused as to what drug seeking was, I had never heard that term used before. I asked him what he meant and he told me he believed I was after narcotics and he was going to advise any physician in the hospital to no longer prescribe them to me from here on out. Unable to speak I just stared at him in disbelief to the way I was being treated. i am still not 100 percent sure what being labeled drug seeking means, is my name going to be logged into some kind of data base or am I red flagged in all the hospitals? If I ever need to go to the Emergency room will I not be able to be seen or treated for any kind of pain? Please someone who is more familiar with the term or knows what will happen help me so I can know what to expect next time I visit an ER room.
